I spent the weekend visiting with Alyssa and I received this text from my mother: "Hi, can u buy as much bottled water as possible to bring home? Gallons or bottles. Water advisory here." um... Happy Apocalypse?

My city is in a water crisis...it's been officially declared an emergency.

And the thing is: no one knows how long this is going to last. My mother said that it could last up to a month...maybe even longer.  It's truly terrifying, how delicate society is. But when you get to the root of the issue, this is all society's fault. The algae bloom in Lake Erie was caused by runoff from the pesticides that are put on farm fields.  It's fairly common knowledge that many pesticides have adverse environmental impacts, and yet, they are still used in huge quantities. It's sickening to me.  Hopefully, this will serve as a wake up call for a lot of people that we all need to start doing a much better job of taking care of the environment...

The song my local radio station made about our water crisis in West Virginia

I've seen arguments implying (and outright stating) that West Virginia deserves the water crisis we are experiencing because the state generally votes Republican. Of course, there have also been the accusations of incest, lack of hygiene, and people who think we are still a part of Virginia-- but we're used to those. The idea that we don't deserve clean drinking water, however, was something new.

First off, I would like to point out that the Aquapocalypse happened in what is arguably the most liberal area of the state if one does not count college towns. Charleston has made so much progress in the last decade and is setting itself up for the future, a step that, sadly, has yet to be taken by many other areas of the state. Of course, we still have a long way to come as a city and as a state. But the lovely thing is, not only do we have people in our older generations fighting for these changes, we also have the younger generations fighting for these changes in far greater numbers and, perhaps, with even more passion.

It has taken, and will take, a long time, but I truly believe that West Virginia will move into the future... With help from it's most passionate citizens-- and we are out there.

But to say that because the state in general votes a certain way-- something that many of us citizens fight against and disagree with, as I have stated-- to say that because of that, we do not deserve clean water? To say that we don't deserve help? And for so many of these statements to come from people who identify as liberals or Democrats... It's disappointing. Instead of saying, "Let them wallow in their own mess!", shouldn't we be fighting for regulations and inspections? Shouldn't we be holding the corporations and industries and politicians-- not just in this area, but nationwide-- responsible? Shouldn't we be banding together to attempt to make a change instead of tearing one another down?

I know, it's naive. But I love my state. It is beautiful and there are so many wonderful and amazing people and places here that are undiscovered. I want to see West Virginia be something better, greater. I want to see West Virginia find it's place in the future and stop living in the coal dusted past. So maybe I'm a little overprotective-- and I just have a lot  of feelings.
