THIS
namingrose answered: I think Lizzie won’t find out til later because it would make more sense for the whole Lydia and Wickham thing to happen if Lizzie doesn’t
AND THIS
arabellla answered: But why does she not affirm Darcy’s side of the story as true? If she knows about Gigi, would not GW repulse her enough to side with Darcy?
Are exactly why I posed the question, about whether or not Gigi is in the letter.
Though Lizzie did mention someone she didn't know was mentioned in the letter. Perhaps Darcy only mentions vaguely what happened with Gigi... Maybe a "And lets just say he broke my sisters heart in his search for money." It could explain her hesitation with believing Darcy's story and why she wouldn't warn Lydia.
thoughts?
Hi! Haven't been very active on here but had to tell you how much I enjoy your thoughts and analyses on DA and Jane Austen. I especially appreciate your fondness for the 1995 P&P version and disdain for a certain other...I was wondering how you felt about the Lizzie Bennet Diaries? How it works as a modernization and wether you find it true to the book? I was sceptic at first but it's growing on me. So very much.
Oh thank you - that's so nice of you to say. I'm really glad you enjoyed them. :)
Re the LBD, I'm in the same position as you really. I held off for ages because I watched 30 seconds of it and thought "P&P gets the glossy American college make-over, that is really something I do not need in my life" and I enjoyed feeling good about myself for not jumping on the bandwagon. (Pfft popular things!!)
Perhaps at this point I could learn a valuable lesson from Lizzie Bennet herself about prejudging and being a judgemental snob because I really, really like it now I've actually watched all the episodes!
I find modern AUs quite interesting in terms of how they are adapted from the source material. A lot of them aren't good but some, like Clueless IMO, really do something clever with the original source material and how it's transferred to the modern world. I feel like the LBD is doing that. I love how it transfers and adapts all the social issues as well as just the romance and how the romance between Darcy and Lizzie isn't the one focus of it. Just like the book, much of the interest is from the humour (Mrs. Bennet, Ricky Collins, Catherine de Bourgh etc.) and the dysfunctional family relations. All the secondary characters are being really well fleshed out and given their own voice and I particularly appreciate that Bing isn't a complete idiot which seems to be the trend recently. Similarly, I LOVE that Lizzie's massive personality flaws are being brought out. Elizabeth Bennet may be charming and clever and very likeable but she is not some perfect, doe-eyed romantic heroine (NOT THAT I'M LOOKING AT ANY ADAPTATIONS IN PARTICULAR HERE OR ANYTHING) and this adaptation brings out all her appealing qualities but also doesn't hide the fact that many times she is, if not unpleasant, then at least seriously deluded in her view of the world. I really love that level of depth.
Perhaps the fact that Darcy isn't the centre of Lizzie's existence and that she does have other people and issues in her life means that actually the romance comes across wonderfully. Honestly, when we first saw Darcy on screen I could just feel the chemistry radiating off them. It's all subtextual and in the greater context of their lives and characters and aaaaaahhhhh! Yes, I'm shipping it. :P
In terms of the medium in which it's produced, I find that fascinating too. I haven't gone and followed all the twitter accounts (yet) or watched Lydia's video diary but it's a brilliant way of telling a story using new media and being interactive with viewers and incorporating different elements into the story. There is no one canon, but lots of different canons and the fact that the characters can watch the videos themselves alters the story. Irrespective of the P&P connection, this is so clever and interesting.
I think a good modern AU has to be a great story well told in its own right but it also has to link faithfully to the source material and provide a commentary on that. I find the LBD constantly makes me reassess my understanding of P&P, Austen's characters, how they relate to the modern world, whether I would have done anything differently (in other words: does it work?) and so on. I'm completely hooked!
And twitter informs me a new video has just been posted so excuse me... I need to go watch! :D
EDIT: No, no new video yet. :( Darn. *refreshes*
arabellla asked:
Hi, seeing Les Mis in London for first time last week of June! But having already spent a lot of money on other events, I thought I'd convince my family to go if I could find cheaper tickets - perhaps in the £20 category. Are there any of those seats in the upper circle you would recommend? Should I pay more and get better seats as a first time viewer? Does anyone have any views on the upper circle first row (aa - those to the side)? Would greatly appreciate any tips you can give me!
