A meta on Magic in general, their views on the darker forms and lighter ones ?

a life without magic doesn’t seem like an actual life to her. there hasn’t been a single day she has spent without using magic so if she were to stop using it for longer, she surely wouldn’t know what to do with her life. maerose has a strong connection to magic as it connects her with her family, her roots. it reminds her of everything she lost, but also everything she still has. taking it from her would be like taking her past.
when she had been a child, there hadn’t been such a thing as dark and light magic; only magic. she grew up believing magic was just good, that it could and should be used for to protect yourself and your coven, the ones you love. for years it had been a mantra to her. when she lost her family, however, she began to view magic in a different way. driven by anger and pain, she wanted revenge, wanted to cause as much pain as she had experienced herself. it was at that point, mae started to stop believing in her mantra. in return, mae learned more about the darker aspects of magic, learned more of its crueler sides. ever since, she calls herself a witch of darkness. devoted and powerful.
meeting young witches, she made it a habit to tell them of the advantages of dark magic, of the power and improved life.
light aspects of magic didn’t come to her mind for quite some years, centuries even. witches of light seemed like a weakness to her, witches who had never experienced pain and loss the way she had. never had she wanted to get involved with any of them or their views until she met hilda. such a young, bright witch, mae had been convinced she would be a powerful witch when older, though at this point she had no idea they were quite different. learning that hilda was a witch of the light had been somewhat of a shock to her, and mae had wanted to avoid getting closer to her — despite her obvious attraction.
hilda had showed her the great aspects of light magic, that they could be equal to the dark magics though less harmful. mae was eager to learn about it, loved to listen to hilda’s opinions. the younger witch showed her a different world and mae began to doubt her own magic. for her, she wanted to be better than she was at this point (causing pain wherever she had been). hilda taught her so much and mae began to embrace her light magic.
while she still prefers dark magic, it is undeniable she is quite fond of light magic as well these days. she might not show it, but at times, she even prefers it. meeting hilda gave her back memories of her past, memories of her childhood. of when the one thing she held onto the most had been ‘ magic is just good ‘.
you see, magic is one of the most important things in mae’s life. it’s extremely defining for her, and for nothing in the world would she want to trade it.
