Day 5 of the 2021 Pioneer Teens Summer program
Today, we explored different galleries and exhibits in Chelsea. At The Rubin Museum of Art, we learned about artistic representations of the Hindu deity Ganesh. We also observed historic and contemporary pieces focused on Buddhist deities like Yama, Tara, and Buddha.
A quote from a plaque at The Rubin:
“Wisdom overcomes death by making us face reality and ourselves.”
We walked along the highline to visit smaller galleries in the neighborhood. At Dia: Chelsea, we saw two large-scale works by Lucy Raven which explored materialism and colonial intervention using sound, lights, and projection. At Hauser and Wirth, we viewed art by Frank Bowling and Tetsumi Kudo. Bowling worked with oversized canvases and bright, abstracted composition. Kudo’s exhibit, on the other hand, was primarily smaller-scale surrealist sculptures.
