Shunske Sato and Richard Egarr performing a movement from Corelli’s Violin Sonata. I did not realise that Corelli had composed Violin Sonatas, although given the violin-oriented nature of his compositions, that should have been obvious. Richard Egarr has also performed with Baroque violinists such as Andrew Manze.
Arcangelo Corelli (1653- 1713), La Follia. I have also heard one version of this piece from Antonio Vivaldi (1678- 1741) and Marin Marais (1656- 1728), so it was evidently a popular work. The genius lies in the melodic variations that accompany the main theme.
For those who celebrate Christmas, now is the time for Corelli’s beautiful Concerto 'Fatto per la Notte di Natale'. In particular, I love the Allegro. While Corelli is known for virtuoso violin writing, one should note the running bass of the cellos in this movement.
