There’s something rather Michael Graves about the obelisk-pointed shape of this glass corner pillar of Equatorial Guinea’s State Treasury, and of course something of OMA’s CCTV in its massing. Both chair- or table-like forms require instituting a hierarchical programming brief, where access to the upper chamber of the building is exclusive. In this case, this permits a dedicated vertical circulation that bypasses the lower spaces, which results in an unusual, and therefore intriguing design, but is also necessarily introduces a certain inefficiency, though surely balanced out by the allowance of a more straightforward structural engineering than OMA in Beijing.
