But no!

It's am architectural internship

Nobody batting an eye at this?

Yeh there's privilege involved (you know what I mean)

But he has NOT ONE qualification. No portfolio. Has studied nowhere. Doesn't know the software like AutoCAD. No final year project to show.

Plus you're gonna go in and tell your potential boss about trauma?? With no resume, no drawings, not even of your food?

Send a potential hire who is talking about how he loves his other job and see what happens

renzo piano building workshop [internship February-August 2015]

Selected by ETSAM as the first student to participate in the internship program of the Fondazione Renzo Piano, I was able to enjoy the intense creativity in Ponta Nave, the workshop´s location in Genoa together with other international students. This exceptional opportunity allowed me not only to get an insight into the dynamic world of an office of acclaimed work but especially to emphasize on a humanistic approach to architecture, shared to us in his “bottega” by the exceptional personality of  Renzo Piano. From his early experimental housing work to current projects, from museums, civic centers, and housing, via contemporary landmarks such as the Centre Pompidou, I was immersed in a rich a heterogeneous world of creativity.

Working not for, but with a mastermind of architecture and an international team has broadened my horizons and showed me a path to pursue my career for an architecture that is not an image, but a stage for human life. In an enthusiastic team, I could develop skills that ranged from technical design to town planning and urban and landscape design in diverse scales, from the architectural detail to the masterplan, and their intricate relationship as a whole.

Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos,  founded in 1985 by Fuensanta Nieto and Enrique Sobejano, is one of the most acclaimed Spanish architectural practices of Spain. Recipients of the Spanish National Prize for Restoration, the Aga Khan Award for Architecture 2010, the AIA Honorary Fellowship 2015 and the Alvar Aalto Medal 2015, amongst others, their architecture explores tradition and memory translated into contemporaneity through form and materiality.

PlanArquitectura [continuous part-time collaboration 2010 - 2015] PlanArquitectura focuses on large scale hotel retrofitting and contrast it to small scale restoration projects in a rural context. A world of speedy processes and standard as opposed to an emphasis on local materials and building methods as well as the inclusion of traditional craftmanship reinterpreted through modern design. A versatile practice of dialogue between the old and the new.

Just a small life update!

I am currently working at a summer internship at a local architecture studio (living the absolute dream!). They work mainly on mixed-use projects and projects for local government- in collaboration with the mayor’s office.

I will probably write more about the work done in the firm and my specific experiences as the summer progresses, but just to outline my actual role:

As an intern, I was surprised that I wasn’t just tasked with generalizing, In previous jobs, I’d been told to make myself useful to anyone in any way needed.

I set up shop in the basement workshop with the laser cutter and the materials library. My project for this summer is working on two booths for a temporary (several month) German Christmas market that takes place in the winter. One booth is a slight remodel of an existing template, while the other is to be built brand new. I am doing the drawings, the renderings, the measurements, and the physical built models for these installations. While it’s nothing huge (like, say, a house), this experience will provide me with breadth and familiarity with the process of moving a product from concept to physical realization. I’m psyched!!

applying for internships is very stressful! at first it was difficult to get used to the idea that my family and community stands so strongly against my goal (for the summer, and for my future), but now every conversation in which they try to discourage me (so, every conversation) only fuels my determination. I may be practically on my own- with a support system I can count on one hand- but you better bet I’ll kick ass and come back to tell the tale! some points on my process right now: i currently have three separate strategies. 1. i’ve collected a list of every single architecture firm in my parents’ city and in my college town. i will be contacting all of them to inquire (a) whether they are open to hiring a summer intern and (b) whether i can visit their office to learn about their work. i can learn something even if they don’t let me work. 2. i’m going through job search sites like Indeed and finding architectural internship openings that i qualify (or mostly qualify*) for. a lot of these are in more interesting cities which is very exciting, and i’ll jump at those opportunities. 3. i’m working my networks (!) which are sadly very short on architects, so i’ll have to ask people if they might know people who know people who know architects, but a personal connection is always the best way to get your foot in the door so i can’t let up on this option yet! *the only two things i’m missing, really, are 1. a portfolio (by the summer i will be proficient in autocad and revit, i’ve used adobe suite before and am generally a fast learner for all other tech things, but i haven’t had a chance yet to compile my class projects into a portfolio- and certainly not to include creative ventures of my own) and 2. enrollment in an official Architecture degree. Hopefully these won’t hinder me too much! Let me know if you have any tips for applications!

Which country should I go for internship/work?

first week of work: ambiguous expectations

my first week at xian dai has been pretty varied.

sometimes i'm given time to research and sketch concept ideas for a museum proposal...

where they give me chinese copic markers to do some basic site planning (good thing i took that college level coloring course this past spring!) 

and other times i sit in on 4 hour client meetings entirely in mandarin followed by a 15-course lunch at the fancy adjoining hotel. i ate all the things. maybe even sea urchin, if it was a sea urchin...

after lunch, it is an acceptable option to nap

most people do. i have yet to try but i'm sure i'll join in soon

while the language barrier has been more difficult than expected, my supervisor dr. tong has been doing a really wonderful job including me on his projects. as vague as my assignments are, i hope i can be helpful over the next coming weeks.
