Amends Drawn in #procreate - which claims this took just over 3 hours but the computer is probably lying? Then again the background fades out a bit and the scale of the figures doesn’t allow for too much detail... so maybe it is close to accurate. Also have a fever today so my sense of time may not be correct either. Redesigned and redrew the stairs I think three times, gave up and went over to #clipstudiopaint to make something simpler (ha!) and in oblique perspective instead of straight on with my beloved turnip pen and shape tools and actual damn rulers. The lotus pattern in the wall paneling is one of my tessellated designs, designed in homage to a 19th century Italian fresco I liked in... Florence probably. The sketchbook got a bit random on that trip... Kinetic installation: Chiris [“chai-ris”] is a transforming #sculpture designed and built by three architects @jetportal , @veanad and @pucarl. The aim was to #imagine how the technology and experience of an aperture mechanism could be scaled up and translated into architecture. An innovative, folding #origami skin adds a rich third dimension and a shifting pattern of light and shadow. Chiris is comprised of over 100 wooden arms; each CNC milled, hand-routed, sanded smooth and completed with plastic sleeve inserts. Seven unique joint details, which occur in a pattern throughout, were needed to keep the delicate cladding in-plane as well as to keep cumulative friction minimal. The supporting #structure consists of a 10’ circular frame on a 10’ square base with steel-cables tied back to the square base’s corners. A moment connection at the frame-base joint was avoided by utilizing a high-density foam block cut into the baseboard. In this #architecture #watercolor Thomas Schaller (@thomaswschaller) shows us a bustling day at an arts and crafts market in front of the San Xavier Mission in Tuscon, Arizona. The sun blankets the mission building in brilliant sunlight, but it appears that the shoppers and vendors have a bit of shade for the time being... I would guess it's an early morning view of the marketplace. Depending on what time of year it is, the temperature at this time of day could be quite pleasant... if it's August, though, I'm sure that market won't be open for much longer that day... way too hot. Thomas did an amazing job recreating the San Xavier Mission in vibrant watercolor. I especially love the changes in color on the stone, as the watercolor paints give it a very natural look and texture. And that stylized entry façade is quite exquisite. It's interesting to note that Thomas was able to make the mission the focal point of the piece even though there are layers of woods & canvas shops, and people in front of it---I believe it's due to the contrast of light and shadow, where the darkened marketplace seems to "fade into the background" even though it is literally in the foreground. Centenial Chromagraph Installation by Design: Adam Marcus, Daniel Raznick. @radadam @variableprojects The Centenial Chromagraph is an installation/ data visualization portraying the history of the University of Minnesota School of Architecture.Their creators refer to it as an exercise in data spatialization where the use of computational tools were employed to generate formal and spatial constructions with large quantities of data. In this case the information collected over the 100-year history of UMN’s architecture school. The installation consists of 100 robotically routed plywood ribs, joined together with 8,080 colored #2 pencils. The curvature of the ribs expresses major historical eras and periods of the School—the tenures of its leadership, the buildings it has occupied, the colleges it has belonged to—while the color of the pencils reflects the changing composition of the School’s degree programs over the past century. For example, the tenure of Ralph Rapson as head of the School of Architecture is evident in the large thirty-year curve that swells out in the center of the piece. Similarly, the prevalence of the Bachelor of Architecture degree, which began in the 1930´s and lasted until the late 1990´s, is legible in the large number of red pencils that extend across that 60-year period. .
