No matter what letter you claim in the alphabet soup, we salute you! June is Pride Month, and it’s kind of a big deal around the Archives. We love our LGBTQ+ collections, and we can’t wait to show our true colors. Have a happy, safe, and empowered Pride--and stay tuned for more #AlphabetSoupArchives!

We had a great time at our recent Archive Your Pride button making event in the UCSF Library Makers Lab!  We had reproductions of archival material, including photographs, flyers and ephemera from LGBTQ community groups and historical events plus plenty of arts and crafts supplies. Thanks to everyone who got creative and celebrated Pride 2017 with us!

And a special shout out to our colleagues at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Archives for inspiring us with their own Pride Month button making event and historical display!

PrideFest Milwaukee may be done, but the UWM Archives will be celebrating our LGBT collections all month!  

Pride isn’t just for gays and lesbians, it’s for everyone in the LGBTQIA2 communities.  This includes bisexuals and others who refuse strict heterosexual and/or homosexual personal identification.  In the 90s, the Bi-Definition group worked to promote visibility and education on bisexual issues and build a more cohesive community.  These “Bifocals” cartoons and this poetry were found in issues of their quarterly publication called Bi All Means!

Whew! What a month. Thank you to everyone who liked or interacted with our posts, visited us at PrideFest, or proudly wore an #ArchiveYourPride button. We <3 You! As y’all probably know, we love our #AlphabetSoupArchives, and we love making them accessible to all! 

Just in time for the end of Pride Month, our excellent Digital Collections Department created a portal to search across all our LGBTQIA+ online content! It brings new meaning to the phase “Together in Pride”

#ArchiveYourPride

The last few weeks the UWM Archives and our friends up in @uwmspeccoll have been preparing for Milwaukee PrideFest! You may have seen our previous post about the about the LGBT Button and Pin Collection held by the UWM Archives, and, if you’ve seen the collection in person, some of these button designs might look familiar. 

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of PrideFest Milwaukee (June 9-11th), we’ll be showing off our collections and handing out recreations of our archived PrideFest and LGBTQ rights buttons! Along with this vintage Pride flare, we had some cheeky fun with images from our Pheonix Hosiery Company Records as well (the “gayer than springtime” button images were taken from midcentury stocking advertisements). Finally, we created our own buttons (top image). So, if you’re here and you’re queer (allies welcome too!), visit us June 9th-11th!
