My mom and I went our first Pride Fest this past Saturday. Here are some of our highlights.
Seeing mom getting teary-eyed and happy seeing elderly gay couples walking around holding hands, because she remembers the time long ago when it wasn’t safe for them to just hold hands in public.
Mom politely telling a homophob handing out religious pamphlets:”I’ve already read the New Testiment. You should read it too!”
Proceds to except a pamphlet from a priest in full priestly getup who’s also wearing a Bi Pride pin. Proceds to talk about said priest lgbtq friendly and excepting church. The kicker? Priest: “I’m not here with those people.” *squints eyes at homophobs*
Getting to see my BFF and surrogate sibling Andi at Pride and getting to hang out with them.
Listening to some of the best beat-boxing poetry I’ve ever had the pleasure of witnessing.
Seeing gender liberated restrooms everywhere. (And seeing the look on my moms face walking out of one.)
Literally collecting every free sticker that was out there and putting them all over my shirt.
Hanging out and talking to the people at a both that had a huge box of free condoms, all the while picking out ones for my lil sister with images that would embarrass her.
WATCHING THE LATINEX DRAG SHOW!!!! DRAG QUEENS AND KINGS SINGING IN SPANISH!!!!
People getting excited over my Gravity Falls hat.
Mom and I befriending these two really nice dudes, Victor and Chad, who are around my moms age. Really great guys. Spent a good chunk of time talking about the Avengers and Transformers with Chad.
“I’m gonna stand over there. I can smell that someone’s smoking a joint over there. Weed smells is SO much better than cigarette smells.”
*mom and I walking around the Gay Pride History tent* Mom: I used to drive past this bar every day! I didn’t know it was a gay bar! Me: What was the bar called? Mom: The Crazy Wizard.
Dancing to Dub-Step with four guys grinding each other behind me. A lesbian couple with arms wrapped around each other while swaying to the music, both eyes only on the other, on my right. Three girls sharing a joint in front of me. And a girl dressed head to toe in Ace Pride clothing, complete with cat ears, on my left.
Mom: I have never in my life been to a place with so many men who didn’t check me out or stared at me.
Needless to say, our first Pride was awesome.
