What's the weirdest book you've ever read? please :)

I'd have to say The Bloody Red Baron by Kim Newman @_@ it can only be described as the world's biggest WW1 literature/RPF crossover fic.

Dracula is also there.

Biggles and co are in it, and they're all vampires. There are German pilots who can transform into some kind of bat/plane hybrid. And those probably aren't even the weirdest things about it tbh /o\ I read it while I was isolating with covid in 2021, and if I hadn't also persuaded @philomytha to read it at the same time I could 100% have been convinced it was some kind of fever dream.

It's utterly crackers, and I'm not sure I'd call it good, but it certainly makes for an excellent game of spot-the-reference when you're not allowed to leave the house for 10 days...

😌 - Someone (who else 😂) gently brushing Laurie’s hair

They’d been gone for only a little while when it started to pour. When Skipper heard the footsteps approach and arrived at the door to greet them, she found —to her horror — two humans and one dog, drenched from head to toe. The dog trotted over and Skipper could see that it wanted to shake out all the water. She yelped and scrambled up the bookshelf, just in time to avoid the torrent of water drops. The humans laughed.

The humans had changed into their dry house clothes and were now sitting on the sofa. Ralph, who was Skipper’s human, had found a towel and was drying out Laurie’s hair. Laurie, as Skipper understood it, was Ralph’s human, and had short red-brown curls, which Ralph methodically rubbed down section by section until it ceased to drip. He then picked up a comb and began to comb through Laurie’s hair, gently massaging the scalp as he made his way from the sensitive skin above Laurie’s ears to the back of Laurie’s neck.

“Mmmm.” Laurie sighed and smiled up at his human.

The comb was soon replaced by Ralph’s hands, which expertly ran its experienced fingers through the lovely auburn curls, his thumbs massaging Laurie’s neck and temple with a deftness honed from years of “doctoring” grumpy captains at sea.

Suddenly feeling quite forgotten, Skipper sprang down from the bookcase, leaped into Laurie’s lap, and curled up comfortably against Laurie’s stomach.

Under the gentle strokes of loving fingers, cat and human purred together in contentment and closed their eyes.

2. When was the last time you cried? Probably within the past week, after reading winnix (band of brothers) fanfic 😭😭😭

3. Do you have kids? Nope! And prolly never will!

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot? Sometimes!

5. What sports do you play/have played? I used to play badminton recreationally

6. What's the first thing you notice about people? Their vibe, I guess, it’s a combination of how they dress, hold themselves, gesture and speak.

7. What's your eye color? Brown

8. Scary movies or happy endings? Happy endings! But if it’s an artsy film I’m fine with whatever ending….or no ending 😅

9. Any special talents? I speak 3 languages! (English, Mandarin, German)

10. Where were you born? Southwestern China

11. What are your hobbies? reading, fanfic, video games, travel, trying new food / restaurants

12. Do you have pets? Nope

13. How tall are you? barely 5'1 (buying clothes, especially trousers & jeans, is a constant struggle 😭😭😭)

14. Favorite subject in school? History (I enjoyed the accounts & narratives of Real Events from the history books more than the novels they assigned in English) and French (because my French teacher was a retired diplomat and told stories about his days stationed behind the iron curtain in Europe)

15. Dream job? Gentleman scholar (a.k.a. a humanities academic with a trust-fund & nice inheritance who does not need to actually earn a living)

Films that live in my head rent-free

Franz (France & Germany)

It’s a strange, quiet film set in the interwar years. A mysterious Frenchman visits a young German widow. He leads her into believing he was her husband’s best friend from his university years abroad, the audience is led to believe he was his lover. All is not what it seems…

Goodbye Lenin (Germany)

It’s a comedy drama about a young man in east Berlin who has to protect his ill and bedridden mother from all shocks and emotional turbulence because she has a fragile heart condition. Unfortunately for him, the Berlin Wall just fell, which is rather shocking and emotional. So he decides to build his mother a fake East German Republic, all in her tiny bedroom. This is a movie I like to rewatch every year or so. It’s relatable in it’s depiction of the way social change and the “grand strokes of history” erode or sweep away the familiar world we know and usher us, some eagerly, some screaming and kicking, into a new one.

Skyfall (UK)

Probably my favorite James Bond movie. The action and cinematography are beautiful. The supporting cast, especially Ben Whishaw, are delightful. Daniel Craig’s performance is excellent.

Soul Mate (China)

It’s a love story set in the late 90s / early 00s about two women and their struggle to fit each other into their diverging lives. It is definitely more on the side of a “special friend” story than a lesbian love story. But that’s what got it wide cinematic release and acclaim in a censorship-heavy country!

It’s such a touching and romantic story, with beautiful cinematography and superb acting.

Pride (UK)

This is an uplifting story with a heartwarming ending set against the backdrop of the miners strike and the AIDS crisis.
