There's something captivating about the stories where two people are together and seem to be the perfect couple, but one doesn't really love the other (or at least thinks so) - but still has so much admiration/respect for them to the point of burning the world for then.

I immediately think about Neverwinter Nights. Aribeth didn't love Fenthick but she, a paladin, went against her own god, lord, and the city to avenge her fiance who was a sacrificial lamb to appease the crowd.

Yes, partially she was influenced by the main villain, but still, Aribeth's fall can't be separated from Fenthick's execution.
