Ari was incredibly talented at getting lost. At least, Hadley had always thought so, and she knew a big part of it was the woman’s small stature. When she finally spotted her best friend leaning against the bar, she walked toward her with purpose, settling in next to her. “That’s it, we’re leaving,” she said despite the fact that she had only been at the ball for half an hour. “One of those munchkins called me ‘ma’am’ and curtsied at me. Me, a ma’am. I hate everything.”

Hadley had come off the dance floor where she’d been dancing with Davis and headed to the spot she, Sabrina and Arielle were using as their “home base” for the night only to find her shorter best friend missing in action. While she scanned the room, she couldn’t help but think Ari had slipped off somewhere. After all, the pink jackets weren’t hard to spot, even in a crowded bar like this. Hadley waited for a bit before checking her phone and finding nothing. When she looked up, Arielle was making her way back to the table empty-handed and Hadley frowned at her. “Where did you sneak off to, missy? I was hopin’ I could steal you away for a dance but it looks like someone beat me to it.”
