The One Where the Pipes Burst
“I am so glad to be home,” Deeks sighed, propping himself against the front door while he searched for his keys in his pocket.
“I would say you don’t know how to have fun, but I agree. Vacation with two year olds is not for the faint of heart,” Kensi said. “I’m glad they’re napping now, but tonight’s going to be rough.”
“I can watch them,” Rosa offered, joining them on the front porch with her luggage.
“Rosa, you’re not giving up your last day of break.” When Rosa started to protest, Kensi added, “Even if you say you don’t mind. You should spend time with Steven.”
Deeks finally got the key in the lock and turned it, shoving a couple of suitcases and duffel bags inside before he walked in.
“Oh, I can’t wait to sleep in my own bed.”
“And on pillows that don’t smell weird. Though the view almost made up for that,” Kensi said around a yawn, following after him. “Hey, do you—”
“Kensi, did you leave a light on?” Deeks interrupted, instantly scanning the room as Kensi stepped into the room.
“No.” She shared a glance with him, suddenly looking wide awake. “Hey, Rosa can you go out to the car with the twins?” she asked in a calm yet firm voice.
“What’s going on?” Rosa asked, glancing around the house too.
“We’re not sure. Just do it, ok?”
“Ok. Be careful,” she told them, hurrying back out of the house.
Assuming a backup position, Kensi followed Deeks into the kitchen. There were signs of recent use, and things were definitely not the way Deeks had left them, but the room was empty. They moved onto the bedroom; the door was closed and Deeks nodded to Kensi, who gave a quick dip of her head, raising her arms in a defensive.
With a quick twist of his wrist, Deeks opened the door and shoved it open. At the same moment, a voice drifted out from the master bath.
“Roberta, are you ready? I have a surprise for you.”
“What is it?” Kensi asked, relaxing slightly and peering into the room.
“Arkady,” Deeks spat out as the man himself walked out of the bathroom resplendent in only a pair of far too small boxers.
“Oh my god!” With a wince, Kensi turned her head away.
“Martin, Kensi, what are you doing here?” Arkady wondered, having the audacity to sound confused.
“You were supposed to be back tomorrow.” Crossing his arms over his chest, Arkady gave them a disapproving look.
“We decided to come back a day early so we had time to unwind,” Deeks said. Then threw his hands in the air. “Why am I explaining this to you? This is ridiculous.”
Kensi put a hand on his forearm. “Breathe, babe. It’s ok.”
“Yes, I see no reason to shout,” Arkady said, puffing out his chest.
“Don’t even start,” Kensi warned him. “How long have you been here?”
“Uh, Tuesday? Maybe Monday night? I forget exact day.” Shrugging, Arkady waved his hand through the air.
“So most of the week,” Deeks summed up. He hated to think of what had been going on in his and Kensi’s absence. “Now for the important question. Why are you here?”
“A pipe burst in my Roberta’s house. Water everywhere. The plumber said she needed to evacuate until the work is finished.”
“So you could have stayed at your mansion,” Deeks said, feeling his blood pressure rising with every second.
Arkady stroked his chest. “Yes, but your mother did not want to be so far away. And you know I cannot deny the woman anything.” He nodded significantly. “Anything.”
“Ok, that’s not—please tell me you did not use our bed.”
“Well, it’s the biggest in the house,” Arkady explained. “We plan to wash the sheets before we leave.”
“More like burn them,” Kensi muttered.
“You do not understand love.” Arkady shook his head in obvious disgust,
“I knew we should have changed the locks before we left.” Rubbing his hands over his face, Deeks breathed deeply for a few seconds.
When he opened his eyes again, Arkady was still there but at least Deeks felt less like strangling him.
“Hey guys, what’s going on?”
“Oh Rosa,” Kensi sighed, turning around as Rosa gingerly peeked inside. “Honey, we told you to wait outside.”
“I know, but I figured since I didn’t hear any shouting or police sirens, it must be ok,” Rosa said, giving Arkady a brief look and a frown. “Caleb and Sophia are still sleeping in their car seats downstairs.”
“Oh, I must go see the little ones.”
Deeks blocked Arkady as he made a move towards the door, which earned him a look of disapproval. “Not in that you’re not. Go put some clothes on.”
“Yes, please,” Rosa said with some relief as Arkady headed for the bathroom. “Oh, Roberta is also downstairs,” she added. “In a very red and lacy nightgown.”
“Perfect,” Deeks mumbled.
With a bright smile, Rosa disappeared again.
“Your mom and your almost father-in-law doing ungodly things in our house was not on my bingo card for this vacation,” Kensi commented.
“Kensi, please don’t put those images in my head. I already know way more than I ever wanted to about those two.”
“I guess we’re just lucky they were actually wearing clothes.”
“Worst vacation ever,” Deeks decided.
