Her newest target is Clara Whitfield, a British PhD student researching dangerous love stories and hiding a painful past. The assignment should be simple enough: 1. Earn her trust. 2. Make her fall in love. 3. Kill her. But how is Shadowheart supposed to do any of that when she's never even been on a date? Then there’s Clara herself. The more time Shadowheart spends with her, the harder it becomes to remember where the performance ends—and who she might be underneath it.

Nocturne and Estelle shared a look as Lunne began to lead Shadowheart upstairs. Nocturne had to give it to Lunne - she sure was a woman of direct action.

Orio gave Estelle and Nocturne a little side-eye. They were unable to suppress a yawn. ”Well, as interesting as tonight has been, I’m heading back to bed. Bonne nuit, you two.”

Droopy-eared and stretching their arms, Orio floated into the little alcove off the kitchen and drew the curtain behind them.

Still incredibly aware of having disappointed Estelle by breaking into the bakery, Nocturne attempted a little grin. ”Wonder what they’ll get up to?” She nodded her head towards the staircase, though her usual bravado was severely lacking.

”Lunne might try to get through to Shadowheart,” Estelle muttered, stirring her tea and staring into its amber depths.

”What do you mean?” Nocturne asked while her stomach twisted with worry.

She glanced towards the staircase. Was Shadowheart going to be in trouble? Would Lunne torture her? What was the Selûnite way of getting information out of enemies?

Estelle furrowed her brow. ”You are aware that our Lady of Silver has no need to pull teeth or break fingers?” she asked. The caustic sarcasm in her voice surprised Nocturne.

”Everybody lies,” Nocturne replied. ”People need some… coaxing to reveal who they really are and what they’re hiding.”

Estelle rolled her eyes. ”Who they really are?” She scoffed. ”Has it ever occurred to you that you two serve a goddess who’s stripped you of your true selves?” Her voice was tense. She was holding back. ”Our Lady is open. Honest. Accepting. Do tell me more about how your goddess loves you.”
