• She doesnt show any romantic interest in the pretty boy

• Every potential romantic tension scene between them it's revealed she's preoccupied with her hyperfixation herbalism and poisons

• She has a very neutral attitude towards sex: she grew up in a brothel and works in the chinese imperial rear palace where all the emperor's concubines live (edit: it's inspired by this time period but it's a fictional country with some major devuations, such as the advanced medicine practices, see original comment).

• She gives sex education to the concubines

• She talks about people's attractiveness with such matter-of-factness; zero apparent interest in any of it herself

• The plot itself is very fun. Girls solves mysteries and knows a lot about poison!

• The women are plentiful and they are nuanced

• The show doesn't fetishize the concubines or sex workers to the point of dehumanization. There is some fanservice in there is some revealing clothing, but everything about how these systems work is very matter of fact (it's just their job) and the drama is more than that.

• The only thing I wish is that there was a Mandarin dub available.

• Note: I don't personally know how historically accurate the show is, as it's a japanese anime set in imperial china. If anyone knows more about that I would love to learn

I'm watching Emma (2009) and I've previously seen the 2020 movie, and I always can't help but aro-code Emma! As someone who is grey-aromantic, I see myself in her. She questions what love feels like, often questions whether she's in love (captures that platonic, infatuation, sexual or romantic attraction confusion) and in general, is perfectly content with remaining unmarried and never being in a relationship. I relate to horror, confusion and somewhat romantic repulsion when someone confesses they romantically like her. Also, it goes without saying that grey-aromantics can experience romantic attraction, and she falls in love with only Mr Knightley, which is a nice example of an aromatic person being in a relationship while retaining their lgbtq identity

A rant on Jo March and growing up aromantic

I can't emphasize enough how hurtful it was to grow up with Little Women as my favorite book (it was also my first book, at age 5) and Jo March as my favorite character; reading her explicitly rejecting a romantic proposal and finally thinking "this is a possibility, I don't have to say yes just because they're my friend" and then watching a lot of people saying that she's selfish, immature, and ungrateful because of that. It is very hard to separate the comments toward Jo to the ones I know I could get if I express her same feelings. They make me feel unaccepted, hurt and as if there was something wrong with me (which for many years made me feel very alienated). Even more, hearing people I know criticize her that way make me feel unsafe to ever consider coming out to them.

Yes, she's "just a book character" but this is why representation is important. We know the "healthy" side of having LGBTQIA+ representation: to feel seen, to see our experiences talked about on a story, to have characters we can use to explain our orientation/identity/attraction to other people. But queer representation also shows us how some people would react to us: denial, repulsion, invalidation. It shows that some would explore virtually any other possibility before accepting that someone is not straight/cisgender; it shows the other side of the coin, the one in which some identities "are ok" but others aren't.

I've had to read and watch tons of Little Women's analysis where it is talked that Jo was confused, or even "playing hard to get". I've gotten tired of explaining how it is possible that Louisa May Alcott was basically forced to give her a love interest because of the expectations of publishers (and the own public, but mostly publishers so it would "sell well"), and that Jo was supposed to stay single on the original plan. I've talked about the own Louisa's life and how she never married, and how the 2019 Gretta Gerwing's version attempts to redeem this part of the story showing "what was expected of female writers (Jo and Louisa respectively)

But it basically feels to be talking to an empty wall.

So I just finished watching Disney's The Princess and The Frog movie and even if I don't like the whole "love is stronger than magic" trope bc it's obviously about romantic love in this case; seeing it from another perspective: I could write an essay on why Tiana is demiromantic (probs demisexual too) and Naveen is demiromantic allosexual. The movie can be seen as aro coded; I mean, frogs are an aro symbol and a green aesthetic for both the most so... just saying 👀.

Think about it. Tiana is focused on achieving her dreams and making her restaurant happen and her song "Almost There" is so aro coded, I loved it! And then we have Naveen, a young prince who is adventurous and loves to travel and have fun and doesn't want to "settle down" at all, he's known to be with a lot of women but never in a romantic context and marriage is more of an economic benefit for him... but it's during the whole frog-y situation that Tiana and Naveen develop that spark for one another. Despite them never wanting any romance to happen to them at all, they experience it for the first time after a close bond formed between them. Demiromantic Naveen and Tiana, I said what I said ✨.
