[despite the inspiration of the song, the fic will have very little themes of suicide. If there ever is in future chapters, i'll be sure to add a warning.
Also!! I'm not at all very good at writing so any and all feedback is appreciated!]
Summary: The giant hill above the temple becomes one of Steven's favourite places to sit and think. Turns out other's feel the same.
It was a dark and cloudy day. Steven had woken up at about 12am, which was very unusual for him. Even if he did quite running homeschool, there was really no excuse and Steven knew it
The wind was blowing through his dark and curly hair as he sat atop the giant hill right above the temple, his legs swinging right over the edge. He wasn't worried of course, if he ever fell he could just float.. right?
Looking out towards the ocean as the waves crashed against the sand, Steven couldn't help his mind wonder a little, it was almost relaxing.
Day turned into night. Steven couldn't remember how long he'd been sitting up there. Suddenly, Steven could hear the distant voice of pearl calling him for dinner, Pulling him out of his own head. The boy quickly got up and headed down. Everything was okay.
Steven was once again sitting atop the very same hill he had the other day. The soft yet harsh sound of wind blowing through his ears. Providing him with a strange calmness he hadn't had in a while.
He'd been coming here a lot lately and he'd been lying if he said he didn't know why. His mind had become such a hectic place-- He tried to convince himself he was only up there to relax. To take some time to himself.
But if he was okay, he wouldn't need it
He took a deep breath, the cold air providing him with little peace, letting him know that it was okay, and he was okay.
Because he had to be, for everyone.
Once again, he was atop the hill. That day had extraordinary sunny. Sure, it had been a worst day then others but hey! the plants he'd been growing had been coming along nicely!! He smiled fondy at the thought.
Steven turned his head to up the the sky, watching it turn from day to night. Counting each and every star, trying to distract himself from his own head.
Today may have been bad but there was no reason to having bad thoughts or anything of the sort!
Needless to say, it did become a habit.
Every single day, Steven would be sit atop the hill in the very same spot overlooking the very same beach. The gems probably wondered exactly why he even started sitting up here at all, but he'd rather keep that to himself.
It was comforting in a way, but he knew that he couldn't keep coming up here forever.
Stven stumbled atop the hill the next morning, and noticed.. someone else sitting right there in his usual place.
Steven hesitantly walked next to her and sat down quietly.
"Uh, hey pearl," He began, giving her a slight smile. He was confused to say the least, why would Pearl be up here? Steven hesitated before speaking again, a slight bit more loudly this time, "Pearl?"
She turned her head to the other, an expression hard to read, "Oh- hello Steven,"
"Uhm.. I really don't mean to be rude but uh.. what are you doing here?? I mean-" He sighed. He could tell something was wrong so he cut to the chase, ".. what's wrong?"
Pearl sighed, "It's silly, I really should be over it by now," She gave a light, half-hearted chuckle before telling me her woes,
"I really thought that she might be the one, but then she told me she was done," She muttered, referring volleyball.
For God's sakes please, is she serious? He just can't believe that for some stupid reason he got here before him-- is she really upset that she can't have what she wanted? She's lucky that's she wasn't cracked like--
"..Volleyball- as silly as that nickname is.. it suited her so well.."
Steven snapped out of his own thoughts after he realised she was still speaking. Oh gosh he felt really bad, he should've been listening! He's constantly wanting to help people- here's his chance to be useful again and he's fucking it up! Stop fucking it up!
"Imiss her everyday, but she's better off back at Homeworld.." Pearl looked over at Steven, a sad smile on her face
Steven had to say something but his mind came up blank- he had to be useful- he needed to say something anything!!
"Well.. Not everything is meant to work out. You two were good for eachother you just.. weren't the perfect fit," He said.
"I think I'm feeling better, thank you for listening," Pearl sighed before standing up and walking away, leaving Steven alone on the hill.
