Stargirl and the Black Canary III Part 5: Brainwave & Brainwave Jr
Shiv
Spoilers for Stargirl 1x10 Brainwave Jr
You’d dropped Courtney back at her home after Henry had ran off and Cindy was nowhere to be found.
“Kodak? Ri? You here?” Your voice echoed through the empty cafe, switching on the light as you stepped through the door.
A green note was left on the countertop.
Gone out, don’t wait up
The drawing at the bottom ressembling a bow and arrow made your face blanch with worry and confusion.
Had Kodak suited up? No, that’s not possible, the suit was destroyed...
Your sleep that night consisted of constant tossing and turning, staring off into the darkness to what you assumed was the ceiling as you went over each possibility.
A creaking on the landing left you bounding towards your door, swinging it open to reveal Kodak, who blinked as they looked over your attire, aka, pyjamas.
“I told you not to wait up.”
“What were you doing, stealing fire back from the gods to give to the people?” You joked, noticing how Kodak had rolled their eyes, muttering something incoherent in the process.
“What?”
“Nothing, get some sleep, I need you to help in the cafe tomor-today, in the morning, it’s 2am, wow... goodnight Y/n.”
“Goodnight, Ri.” Kodak had already slipped away behind their door as you said that, words dropping to the floor, dripping into the wood before you turned, closing the door behind you.
The wood was rough against your shoulder blades but the carpet was soft against your soles, even through your socks. Sitting against the door in the darkness was probably a bad idea but the bubbling in your stomach wasn’t stopping, it was discomforting as you sat there, eyes flicking onto the glowing numbers of your clock.
02:31
A sigh escaped your lips as your head fell to rest on your hands.
“It’s going to be a long night...”
///
“Lance! Lance! You up? I need your help downstairs!”
The rapping of Kodak’s knuckles on your door left you shivering as the vibrations hit your shoulder blades.
“Uh, what? Um, be down in ten!”
“You better be!” Kodak’s voice was loud and with one final rap on the door, they were gone downstairs into the cafe.
“You better be. I will be. Ugh.” you mocked Kodak under your breath, glancing at your phone as you walked into your bathroom.
///
You were serving fruit salad when your phone began to ring.
“I have to go-” You announced, not expecting Kodak to throw a pancake in your face.
“Food to go.” Was all they said as you ducked out of the cafe to hurry to your bike.
///
“What’s going on?” You enquired as you met Courtney at Blue Valley General. “Can you stand outside whilst I talk to Henry?”
You raised an eyebrow before just giving a slight nod, following Courtney to the room where Brainwave was being kept.
You were sat across from the door, flicking through the texts on your phone from Beth about investigating something for Pat, Yolanda being mad about Henry, Kodak hadn’t messaged you at all but your grandmother had.
“How’d it go?” You asked as Courtney exited Dr King’s room.
“Uh... it went, at least.” Courtney replied, noticing your confusion behind your frown.
“Do you want to come over? I think Pat wants you to look at the microwave-” Courtney was a terrible liar, you knew that much.
“Is that code for come over and hide in your basement? You know how weird that sounds?” You asked, heading to your bike as Courtney followed.
“I would feel better if you came over for dinner, I think Pat is cooking...” Courtney began but you just nodded, slipping on your helmet.
“Yeah, okay... all Kodak can cook is breakfast food and I can’t eat leftover fruit salad for dinner for the third time this week...” You rambled, Courtney just frowned at you.
“I don’t think you’re supposed to cook fruit salad-”
“Wait- oh for- Whitmore, come on, do you want a ride home or not?”
Courtney just bit her lip, taking the other motorcycle helmet from you.
“Yes, please.”
///
“I failed a history test... so Y/n is here to help me study, I thought she could stay for dinner-”
You just awkwardly waved at Barbara before the doorbell rang.
“I’m going to uh, head down to the basement to look at that microwave-” You stated, heading towards the basement door as Courtney opened the front door.
“Cameron?”
“Hi, Court.”
“Change of plans.” you muttered to yourself, hurrying into the dining room to hide your phone under the table, activating the voice recorder and turning the phone on silent.
You were just able to dodge Jordan as you hurried down into the basement, spotting the microwave that Mike had broke with his marshmallows.
Hiding in places in Courtney’s house definitely was not something you wanted to be spending your time doing as you began to take apart the old microwave, laughing slightly at the broken toaster next to it, ragged claw marks had sliced through the shiny metal.
///
“Uh, Pat, I left Y/n’s dinner in the oven and it’s gonna burn...”
“Need a hand?”
“Yes.”
///
You were sat on the floor with pieces of microwave around you when Courtney walked down the stairs, carrying a bowl.
“What’s wrong?” You enquired, taking the offering of chicken and dumplings from Courtney in the process.
“So, uh, I think Jordan Mahkent is Icicle... he touched a scalding hot plate and didn’t even notice-” Courtney began to explain, noticing your face as you ate the dinner.
“So, what you’re saying is, we’ve got Brainwave and Brainwave Jr... now we also have Icicle and potentially Icicle Jr? Great... that’s... just great...”
“Courtney? The Mahkent’s are leaving,” Courtney stilled at her mother’s voice, ushering you to come upstairs with her as you carried the now empty dinner bowl to Pat in the kitchen.
“What are you doing here?” Pat whispered to you as you passed him the bowl.
“Courtney invited me.” You whispered back before slipping back into the dining room to grab your phone.
“Who’s that?” Cameron’s voice echoed from the hallway as he spotted you standing in the dining room on your phone.
“Huh, oh, that’s Y/n, she works with Pat or something, I don’t know, she was going to help me with history.” Courtney explained.
“Still am!” You shouted from the dining room, walking over to stand next to Courtney, folding your arms as you stared at Cameron.
“It was good to see you, hopefully, we can, uh, do something soon?” Cameron asked, glancing at you as you glared at him.
“When she doesn’t fail her history test...”
“Sure.”
You just shrugged at Courtney as she said bye to Cameron, slipping back into the kitchen to avoid Jordan but still watching as Courtney spoke to him.
You paused as Courtney shut the door behind the Mahkent’s, grabbing you by the sleeve to pull you down to the basement after her, Pat calling after you both.
“What do you think you’re doing?” Pat asked as Courtney got the cosmic staff from it’s crate.
“I was going to tidy up the microwave parts...” You deadpanned, gesturing to the small piles of microwave.
“What is that?” You froze, looking up from your spot on the floor as Barbara stood on the basement steps with a washing basket.
The staff buzzed as it levitated in the air momentarily before dropping to the ground to play dead, the desire to face-palm being fought by you as you stood up.
“And now, I think I should leave...” You announced, hurrying past all three of them even as Courtney gave you a begging look to stay.
///
When you arrived back at the cafe, you had two texts from Courtney.
“Yikes... poor Pat...” You whispered under your breath, unlocking the cafe door, locking it behind you then heading up the stairs to your apartment.
///
You spent the better part of the next day working in the cafe as Kodak had disappeared again.
Your phone was on the back counter top, plugged in but you’d forgotten to turn the switch on to charge it.
That would be a mistake.
Kodak didn’t appear until way after lunch.
“Y’know, Lance, if you were aiming to charge your phone, switching it on at the plug would be a great start.” Kodak remarked, the clicking of the switch making you turn around and stare at Kodak, mop in hand.
“You’ve got some missed calls by the way.” Kodadk stated, holding your phone up as it charged.
“Frack. Thanks, Ri.” You replied passing them the mop as you read over your messages.
“Shit.”
“Y/n? What’s-” Kodak began but they just sighed, watching the apartment door slam as you ran up the stairs.
You were getting quicker at suiting up and getting to your Black Canary bike, speeding over to Cindy’s house to get to the basement.
///
“What in fresh hell is going on!” You shouted as you got to the bottom of the stairs, spotting Yolanda and Beth first standing infront of the bars as Henry, Courtney and Rick stood on the other side.
Your eyes flickered onto Brainwave.
“And who are you?” He asked, trying to read your mind.
“Let them hear, the Black damn Canary.”
“You three, move!” You shouted, gesturing at Rick, Courtney and Henry before you screamed.
The sonic scream was enough of a distraction for Rick and Henry to pull the bars apart again, Rick getting through before Henry used his powers to force Courtney through too.
Your scream wasn’t going to save him.
The forcefield he’d put up would protect everyone else from his father but him.
“Dad, listen to me, I know what these powers did to you. How they warped what you believed in. But people aren’t monsters. I don’t want to fight you. I love you.”
Rick turned to you, desparation in his eyes.
“Can’t you do something?”
“My scream would just bounce off the forcefield and hit all of you instead!” You stated, watching as Henry confronted his father.
“Jordan didn’t kill your mother. I did.”
Everyone stopped trying to break through the forcefield at that, all four of the teenagers beside you stepped forwards to listen.
“I had to make a choice. Don’t make me choice again, son. Stand by my side now, or not at all.”
“I will never stand by your side.” Henry growled, using all his remaining energy to send a flurry of rocks towards his father, which were stopped instantly by Brainwave.
“Goodbye, son.”
You didn’t expect Henry to fly towards the bars, the forcefield was still up but nobody cared as all attention was on the near collapsing ceiling and saving Henry.
“I am sorry.” Henry stared at Yolanda who was tearing up,
“You’re right, people are good, don’t let this change your mind.”
Courtney stared in horror as the ceiling began to shake.
The forcefield went down with the ceiling as you tried to sonic scream the debris away from Henry.
The goosebumps rippling from the back of your spine were cold as devastation washed over you.
Yolanda was crying in Rick’s arms as he stared down at the rubble. Beth was in shock. Courtney had barely moved besides her hand going to her mouth.
You were barely able to force a gasp from your mouth, trying your best not to slump to your knees.
“Oh my god...”

I really don't think I've ever hated Lex Luthor so much
