For me the rules are one layer, one brush (CSP default gouache) and no eyedropper tool on the reference image (I use it on my own painting once I've got the colors down)

In fall 2013 John Walsh, Director Emeritus of the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, presented a popular semester-long public lecture series that took a close look at eleven important paintings from Yale’s art museums that represent scenes from history, myth, scripture, or literature. In every case the artist intended to do more than delight and entertain the audience. The paintings depict situations in which moral issues are at stake, usually acts of heroism of one kind or another. The lectures traced the tradition of “history painting”—the category to which all of these works belong—from the Renaissance on through its rise to official dominance, its fall from privilege in the eras of Realism in the 19th century and abstract art in the 20th, and its reappearances in the 21st. A recurring question is whether for a modern audience these works still pose moral questions that we ought to take seriously. Figure drawing day 3- Leg Day!
✍️ Week 1 – Mastering the Basics
I’ve just wrapped up the first week of my month-long challenge to rebuild my art skills from the ground up starting with lines and simple shapes.
It might not sound exciting, but honestly, it’s been more challenging and more rewarding than I expected.
Here’s what Week 1 looked like:
• Practicing straight lines, curves, Ovals, Circles, Squares, Etc
• Learning to draw with my shoulder, not just my wrist
• Focusing on accuracy, consistency, and control
• Following exercises from Brent Eviston on Skillshare
Progress has been slow at times, and yes, a little frustrating, but I’m already starting to notice a difference. My lines are a bit steadier. My shapes are a bit more confident. Most importantly, I’m starting to enjoy the process again.
No finished drawings, no big results yet, but that’s okay. This is the foundation I skipped the first time, and I’m finally giving it the time it deserves.
