Why i do art mentoring for free
To me art (expressing yourself) such a personal thing, and i am self-taught through media I've found online, so I can't put a price on my knowledge that I acquired for free, or put a price on something so abstract.
I was chatting with someone about this, and they said I'm doing a noble thing, and gathering teaching experience for later. But here's the thing; I can't imagine myself EVER asking for payment for art mentoring.
That would go against my beliefs, and be unfair for my future students.
I was learning how to draw alone, and it was very difficult and took ages, so I'd love to guide someone into succeeding sooner :)
This was a comment left under my pinned post where I'm offering art mentoring for free, because to me art is such a personal thing that you can't put a price on, but others could disagree.
Either way, when someone offers you an opportunity out of sincerity, especially in THIS economy, don't be like this fuckwit.
I just got done with my first mentoring session. It's with a group of teenagers doing metal casting sculptures and I think I'm more excited about it than they are.
Art mentors
It'd be awesome if we could have like an art mentoring programme on tumblr. People could sign on to be mentors or students and each student could be designated a mentor depending on what they wanted to learn and what the mentor could teach etc. they could meet on Skype or something for lessons every now and again and maybe students could show their work to the mentors and they could evaluate it together (they could also evaluate some of the mentor's work). I think it would be educational to both the person learning and the person teaching, they'd probably both end up learning from each other.
