something I think about fairly regularly is the 2010s era art community on Twitter and how absurdly toxic it got. I think the reason is partly all the usual stuff with how Twitter is specifically designed to make people mad and that puts any community building activity on there on shaky ground, but also Twitter was an unusually (for the time) awful platform for like, actually looking at art. It used to be that it wouldn't even show your whole drawing when you posted it, it would show this bizarre cropped version that you'd have to click thru to see properly (to their credit they DID eventually fix this), and if you followed a lot of artists it got annoying real fast--not a good environment for anyone looking to build an audience! And yet that was the main site for artists for YEARS. Unpleasant stuff.
Of course, these days a lot of up and coming artists primarily use tiktok to share their work, which is honestly even worse--tiktok's not an art platform! It's a video platform! If you want to make videos tiktok's a good choice but if you want to make non-animated art virtually anywhere else would be a better fit for you! What are you doing, man?
