Wich one of you is the best at telling stories?
Both me and mags tend to keep peoples attention when it comes to telling a good yarn at parties. I like to think we’re conversational, but tell the important parts.
It’d probably have to be Tornic or Meyers though, right?
Oh no no. Goodness me no. I am a researcher and a keen diarist but if I were to try telling a story...no. I Would take forever to get to the point. I love stories and I love information but..my oral skills are somewhat lacking.
[subject stifles a thoroughly immature snicker]
I gotta bow out on this one a little, too. My stories have reached acclaim all over my own planet but they work within their format. What works in print, particularly for plays translates very poorly into a spoken story.
Format aside, you also need to be able to read your audience when telling a story. Know when to give a little extra, know when to skip to the next part. In a word, be good with people.
So, that does rather preclude me.
Captain Myers. Would your measure for good story telling be measured by the size of the audience or by its diversity and its level of attentiveness?
The latter, I suppose.
Very well.
Well, one time I had been assigned as a special weapons trooper (plasma) to a small, slash and burn mission. basically a small squad of us had to do as much damage as possible. No survivors. Multiple methods of attack.
So aboard the shuttle it was simply me, corporal McClannahan as well as the grids.
The grids?
it’s a collective term we use for 4 of the giant women on board. C-16, Yaroslava, Cuddles and Daal. They have no real rapport with each other and lack much unit cohesion, but from a unit size to damage ratio they’re incredibly effective.
It’s a long shuttle trip, so I’ve largely busied myself with training and close combat drills. behind me I notice the unfamiliar sound of Corporal McClannhan speaking.
Stranger still, he’s quite into whatever story he’s telling.
Stranger STILL AGAIN is that every single one of the grids is hanging on his every word, utterly enthralled. C-16 has a huge smile on her face.
I wonder out loud whether maybe there is something better they could be doing with their time and they ALL get very agitated, even Daal, and insist he be allowed to continue his story.
In its own way, it was one of the stranger things I had seen up to that point.
Knew he was bogartin’ some good stories.
