Powell and co. went on a 3 month cartographic and scientific exploration of the Green and Colorado Rivers in the summer of 1869 - which included the first known trip by a European through the entirety of the Grand Canyon. . Interesting guy Powell, explorer, geologist, naturalist, ethnologist, professor, soldier... you can see on the stamp, where his arm was amputated in the Civil War. .
