"All unfree from the Danish West India islands are from today emancipated" Peter von Scholten While many across the United States and its Territories are preparing for the 4th of July and American Independence celebrations, today July 3rd marks a very important holiday in the US Virgin Islands – Emancipation Day. 70 years after the revolutionists in the thirteen colonies rose up from tyranny in 1776 and 14 years before the enslaved were emancipated in the United States, the enslaved on St Croix banded together and coordinated an uprising. They were the second island in the Caribbean after Haiti to demand their freedom and set the precedent for emancipation throughout the Caribbean. Often it is said that Danish Governor Peter von Scholten abolished chattel slavery. And while it is technically true, it was actually an uprising of enslaved people on July 3, 1848, that prompted him to do it much earlier than he had planned. After the beginning of riots and speaking to General Buddhoe, Governor-General Peter von Scholten had this flyer printed and posted to officially declare the abolishment of slavery. #usviemancipationweek #usterritories #USVirginIslands #usviemancipation #usviemancipationday #StCroix #stthomasusvi #stjohnusvi #budhoe #budhoepark #DanishWestIndies #july3rd #emancipation #fyahbun #generalbuddhoe (at General Budhoe Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCLfAGdjqfV/?igshid=4xdkmmdbfe5r

More about Guam, where I now call home! 🐕 Guam's biggest problems are government corruption, drugs and stray dogs. The government officials have been caught pocketing money for luxuries instead of bettering the community, and recently increased taxes just to pay their high salaries when federal funding was cut. But if you're American you're already used to this...there is also a big problem with meth. 🐛 However, living on Guam is rather cheap. Housing is cheap, and transportation is almost unnecessary. Food is a little bit pricey because it is mostly imported, but everything else makes up for it. There is no Uber, but taxis are cheap. 🍛 Tamuning has many great restaurants for cuisine from the whole world! Shopping options are limited but I'd say pretty decent. And for everything else, there is online shopping! 🇯🇵 If you are the Japanophile type, you would like Guam, because Japanese food and products are common. Also, there are some cultural similarities and almost everyone can speak some Japanese here. 💊 Aesthetic procedures like mole removal, laser lipo and teeth whitening are very cheap here! But medical care is not the best, mostly because of the government refusing adequate funding. Many people keep global insurance or insurance from their home country and return for checkups or surgury. 🎶 Despite being tiny, Guam does have an entertainment industry! There are country bands, rock bands, pop singers, model agencies, drag shows, gay bars, many nightclubs, karaoke bars, and the adult industry (strip clubs, hostess bars, massage parlors) is very big. Not so mysterious anymore! Why not come visit Guam or consider living here? #himitsu #enolareven #guam #aboutguam #usterritories #tamuning #tumon #guamstagram #instaguam # (at Tamuning, Guam)
