Facebook Scroll - class assignment Artist: Marcelle Medium: Watercolor, ink Notes: Get it? SCROLL. Anyway, for class we had to create a historical piece that celebrates our personal selves or culture. I went quite literal and made a Facebook timeline, as I feel social media is often the modern equivalent of stuff like scrapbooks. There is a dowel rod at each end of the paper so it can be rolled up easily, and the ribbon has velcro to secure it in place. The faux wax seal was made from carving out a backwards “f” for the logo onto a piece of clay, then pressing it into hot glue, then painted over.

Balboa Park  Artist: Marcelle Medium: Acrylic on rice grains on canvas 04/19/17

Class Assignment: Create a piece about identity (yourself, your heritage, etc.) I am full Filipino and food, and to an extension - rice, is a huge part of our culture. I didn’t want to paint a picture of food, but then I thought about literally painting onto food. I glued down rice grains onto black canvas board with Mod Podge and spray sealer. Then to include more of my personal history, I chose to paint a building from Balboa Park, a famous place in San Diego where I was born.  This was challenging because of the literal texture, but through the layers of colors and depth, it made for an Impressionist-like painting. There are flecks of gold because I used a spray can of gold paint that was about to run out. This whole piece was very experimental but I’m pleasantly surprised with the results.

Class Assignment: Work in small scale paintings with the following ratios: 1:1, 3:4, and 1:4 Thoughts: I like the combination of the straight, modern architectural elements contrasting against the wildness and color of nature, so I hope to include that in my next piece [will post later]. I intentionally tried to have a uniform palette but also the overcast day and nature of the watercolors lead to it being quite neutral. Also tried to have a looser more illustrative style, kind of like Studio Ghibli movies.
