“Ma’am?”
She glanced up at the rasp of a man’s voice. Towering over her was the same gentleman from the entrance of the alley. In his hand, he held out a tin of ointment that had spilled from her luggage.
“I believe this is yours,” he said softly.
“Uh, yes. Thank you.” She took it from him with a weary nod.
To her surprise, the man stooped beside her and helped her gather the scattered bits and pieces of her possessions.
“If you don’t mind me asking, what all went on ‘round here?”
“Just trusted the wrong kids, I guess,” she sighed. “I asked them to watch over my luggage while I attended to some business in town. It seemed they got the hare-brained idea to try to rob me. Well,” she chuckled mirthlessly, “Jokes on them. I’ve got nothing worth stealing. Took my last red cent to get to this god forsaken place. And now not only am I broke but I just found out I’m a widow too.”
“A widow,” the man repeated, taken aback. “By a couple a’ kids?”
“No, no.” She waved away the notion with her hand before reaching for another of her stockings lying in the dirt. Regretting the words that had slipped out of her mouth, she struggled to formulate a response. “It’s—it’s a long story.”
“Sounds like it must be,” he said, skeptically.
