I wanna hear your thoughts on #22! And #8 👀
8: How slow is a slow burn?
Slower than that. No, slower.
Obviously there is a limit, especially in the romance genre where the development of the romantic relationship is the whole point. There has to be some concrete sense of progress, or you hit the tipping point at which the little laboratory mouse in the reader's brain gives up on pushing the little button because there's not enough promise of tasty payoff.
But I do love a slow burn. My favorite part of a fictional romance is the earlier stages, the angst of uncertainty and the wonder of discovery. The more sparingly the moments of progress in the relationship are doled out, the more meaningful each little bit feels.
It's probably a good thing I don't really do long-form fic, huh.
22: What is it about watching the same two idiots falling in love over and over again?
Gosh, I don't even know, but it really is, isn't it?
I think part of it is the melding of the comfort of the familiar - you know these characters, their personalities and the way they come together, you already know you love watching them be - plus the shiny newness of the unfamiliar.
Me, like I said, I love those early stages of a romance. Which is not to say that there's not also value in an established relationship, but it does mean I have an endless appetite for watching two idiots fall in love and then immediately turning around and doing it again, but this time what if...?
This is also why I have a weakness for amnesia plots, cliche as they are. There's just something about taking two characters who've progressed in their relationship and putting them unexpectedly no longer on the same page. It's fascinating to me.
You can only drag out a slow burn so far, but there's always new ways to remix the story, even if it's as simple as seeing it written by the hand of a different writer.

i'll take this one to be about food and say this: i can pop raw cherry tomatoes like grapes and i love how much it freaks tomato-haters out

WHERE DO I EVEN START?! We've known each other for SO LONG. You were so young when we met??? I remember chatting on AIM in the early mornin' hours before work with you. I feel like I was at least in the background of your life for almost every major event that happened. I still wish I'd been able to make it to your wedding, but at least we got to meet in person (and that was really a lot of fun).
I think the #1 thing I can compliment you on is your writing. Need I remind the world that the only reason I churned out nine billion KentLyn 'fics in the mid 2000s was 100% because I stumbled on your 'fic and FOR SOME REASON READ IT was actually converted to the ship in the process? That is the ONLY time in my life I've ever 1) read A LONGFIC for a ship I didn't already love, and 2.) converted ships entirely based on reading a fanfiction. WILD.
I would get so excited to see you uploading a 'fic that I couldn't even read it for like FIVE MINUTES because the excitement to read would be almost overwhelming. (And also I had to prepare myself to type out the longest review/comment known to man. I had to crush Teddy's dreams of giving you the first and best comment.)
I am so proud to see you out there writing for a living. I know the kind of writing you're capable of and I know you're dazzling your readers. It's one of those things, man. I've said it before and I'll say it again, but your writing has always been off the charts levels of engaging. You had the power to write something hilarious and equal power to write a touching, emotional scene.
Pumpkin, potion, bat!
Do you prefer sweet or savoury foods?
Normally savoury—I can never get enough of pizza or curry—but I am a huge ice cream fiend
Do you have a ‘party trick?’
No, but I do know people who have several, including a friend who debuted a glasses stack two years ago
Do you sleep with stuffed toys?
I bring out my dumbo tsum tsum occasionally but my cats take bed priority because they’re very snuggly boys :3
Would you ever write a romance novel? :3c
i have wondered this for 10,000 years myself.
i already suffer for minimum payout by writing fanfic, so why not suffer for minimum payout by writing something that’s not fanfic, amirite? i’ve been writing for more than half my life and i’ve come a long way! i could definitely take on a big project...in uh...bite sized pieces because i still have a stressful day job, but i could do it! maybe in the winter, when things are slower! if i applied myself!
but then i remember how hard it is to get published and how depressing self publishing is, and i think about how i’d respond to the plethora of rejection letters (“haha F in the chat for me”) and the fact that i never finish anything i start leaps out of a back alley and beats me up, and i’m reminded that i don’t really have a platform from which to promote myself because my audience reads fanfic because it’s fanfic...and i’m like oh actually i think i’ll just sit here and write fanfic some more cause...i know how to do that already!
but then on a saturday i sit at the computer for 14 hours and write a 15,000 word long video essay script for a film nobody cares about and i’m like hmmm mayyybe that time would be more productively spent doing something else
because i probably won’t finish the video essay anyway
and then it comes to me: i like writing about stuff that already exists. creating new and shiny worlds and characters just...doesn’t appeal to me. i’ve tried creating characters and worlds and i’ve started novels, but i always tossed ‘em in the bin ‘cause they were boring to me. dull. i honestly can’t imagine how it is people feel passion for their own stuff. i’ve always lacked it.
so i guess my answer is ‘nah.’ but maybe more precisely, it’s, “i can’t imagine it would ever feel worth it to me.”
@arthoure said: This DOES sound good. Same logic as a kalimotxo, but fancy
Yeah! So apparently back in the 1970s this was a legit way for owners of large wine cellars to “freshen up” a renowned vintage that was showing its age in an off way. Nowadays that’d be considered fraud and adulteration but hey, still tastes good.
(Cue discussion on ‘authenticity’ and fraudulence and what anyone is actually paying for in a vintage wine.)
But yeah the kalimotxo is my favorite two-ingredient “cocktail” hands down. It’s so close to the creme de cassis method that my spouse has gotten confused on which is the secret adulterant and which is the legit cocktail and has told at least two bartenders that Coke syrup is the secret to “refreshing” old wine.

Any TV shows you’re into these days?
I really like GLOW and was excited about S3 that was released a few weeks ago and watched like... half of it and then just stalled for no particular reason.
I’ve watched two episodes of Why Women Kill. And, hmm, I’m not sure I like it, it’s very well made but there’s something about the underlying assumptions of the premise and tone that makes me cringe as I watched. But it’s also breezy and fun so I haven’t dropped it yet.
Other than that, lots of animation: Fruits Basket, Carole & Tuesday, Mix Meisei Story, Mo Dao Zu Shi S2, O Maiden in Your Savage Seasons, and a few others that I haven’t kept up with (like Vinland Saga)
