Okay. I was on my beloved AO3 and I saw something that made me do a double take. So, now I really want to know…

I’m so curious to see how long people have been on AO3! I know some people have been on there since beta/invite only, but I would love to see what the number is on tumblr!

I had been raised in such an achievement-oriented environment, so inundated with the myth of Talent, that I thought it was only worth doing things if you could “Win” at them.
Some good thoughts for Orville, please. The vet thinks he has a mass under his lower left eyelid, and is reaching out to a friend/colleague to see if it will be possible to remove his eye and the mass and have room for closure afterward.
Yesterday, his eye started bleeding (the mass popped or ruptured) and while the bleeding did stop, this obviously isn't a good sign. I sent pictures to my vet and will wait to hear back from them on what the next step is, but I must admit...I don't think it will be good.
Last year we said goodbye to Orville's mother (Echo) because her tumor, that started as a lump behind her left front leg, took over her lungs—after being removed once.
He is the same age she was, now (10), so you can see why this is concerning, but if the vet thinks the surgery can be done, I will move forward with that (I was given an estimate for it already).

Oscar and André are a little behind on the news out of France, so it ended up getting kind of info-dumped in, here.
The aristocrats that were arrested under Lafayette's orders is referring to the Day of Daggers, on 28 February 1791. The very basic background of this event is:
Municipality voted to restore the dungeons of the Château de Vincennes to house more prisoners.
A rumor started staying there was a secret underground passage between the Tuileries and the Château.
People suspected the restoration was a conspiracy to allow King Louis XVI to flee France in secret.
Workmen went to demolish the prison with the goal of preventing Louis from escaping.
Lafayette led a contingent of the National Guard to Vincenes to quell the riot there, but with so much of the Guard away from the Tuileries, many nobles were worried about the safety of King Louis XVI.
Nobles flocked by the hundreds to the Tuileries armed with concealed weapons like daggers to defend the king, but remaining officers thought this was a counter-revolution, and Lafayette returned to disarm them.
Louis XVI asked them to lay down their weapons, promising they would be returned the next day. But the weapons were confiscated and sold by the soldiers.
Long-term, this caused a lot of upset and confusion. The nobles were there to defend the king, but because they were arrested and their weapons confiscated, it put fuel on the fire of the assumption that they actually planned to take the king away as a counter-revolution measure.
Really unfortunate turn of events.

Mirabeau was kind of a piece of shit, and I would say his portrayal early in the manga is generous. He was pretty well-known to suck as a person.
He ended up rather trusted, and even revered through the start of the French Revolution, and died on 2 April 1791 in Paris from pericarditis (inflammation of the fibrous sac that surrounds the heart). Apparently his death hit a lot of people very hard, especially the Jacobin Club.
He was later branded a traitor to the Revolution (after his secret dealings with the king were uncovered), but historians sometimes argue that he was not the traitor he was accused posthumously of being, as he did not compromise on his political beliefs and mainly tried to keep building a bridge between the revolutionaries and the monarchy.

most carousel companies had their own individual style when it came to their horses manes but some shared common labels
today we’ll be talking about the different kinds of manes used on carousel horses
Windswept
also known as wind blown manes, carousel horse carvings were all about showing a horse in motion! this was the perfect mane to do the job
Peekaboo Mane
just as it sounds, this mane has a gap that you can look through!
peekaboo manes were an incredible flex in the carousel world, it proved that a company could carve thin pieces of wood without the risk of it snapping
Trojan Mane
also known as roached or chopped manes, this style of hair was given its name for its trojan-helmet resemblance
allan hershell is my personal favorite when it comes to trojan manes. sometimes they blend the trojan mane & peekaboo mane as seen in the first photo below
Side Swept
these manes bring a softer/elegant side in contrast to their energetic counterparts
it also brought great emphasis to the romance side, the side of a carousel horse that always faces the crowd
Flying Mane
similar to the windswept mane but with more volume and exaggeration
sometimes carvers such as parker would combine the peekaboo mane with the flying mane as shown below to the right
Top Knot
this mane is styled as if the bangs are floating or curled into a knot on top of the horses head, giving an energetic appearance
introduced in the 1920s, this style was used by the dentzel/muller company the most
