I want you to know how this affects you and me. “Instagram now demotes vaguely 'inappropriate' content.” As my classes, artwork, activism and resources are likely to be considered “vaguely inappropriate” ... this is yet another way people like me, my friends and colleagues are running out of ways to create and reach out to you. The judge and jury of what constitutes inappropriate are not our peers. Whether bots, algorithms or people, the standards will be unclear - arbitrary at best - and without any likelihood to contest it. The arbiters of acceptability are just as likely to be those whose world views are formed by values that ‘other’ us, that want us silenced and conformed, that consider us degenerates. (“Degenerate Art” - also a term used in 1937 in Munich.) - - If you count on social media to know what your favorite creators and activists are doing, make sure to also follow them in other ways as well. Depending on the artist / activists, they will have other sources like newsletters, lists, groups, Patreon, web sites, etc. Ask them how they want to be followed and supported.
