I had a lot of fun with this little doodle. I was playing with 2 new techniques. The first was using a Gaussian blur to make the rainbow effect from solid colours. I just filled blocks with solid colours, blurred the layer with a Gaussian blur and then used the smudge tool to refine the spread. Next I was playing with using a clipping layer. I added a clipped layer on top of the rainbow and inverted it to show a solid black background. Then I used the eraser tool as a pencil to sketch in young Sammy’s outlines. After that I used a combination of a blender brush and a soft eraser to shade in the skin highlights. It was so much fun the way the rainbow showed through from below. I think this would be a really cool technique use to make a double exposure style of artwork. Definitely an idea for another time 😄

Playing with fire

With this picture I wanted to used a similar technique to the one I had used to draw Sammy. And while I like the final result, it wasn’t exactly what I was aiming for. The plan was to draw fire where Rowena’s hair would go and then to put the black layer on-top and erase the highlights to have the fire showing through from underneath. I ran into some problems tho because I had included white in the flames and as I etched in Rowena’s curls on the black layer there were too many random flashes of white throwing off the flow of her hair. So midway through I went back to the base layer and covered all the white with a lot more red. The end result is that I have a really interesting fire themed colour palette for this picture (something I wouldn’t normally have chosen if I was just choosing colours as I was drawing) but it’s not obvious that the hair is drawn on-top of actual flames, it all just looks red. So in future I need to consider how much of the under painting will show through and what shapes will best complement each other. Maybe I could do elements or nature scenes as underpaintings to match a character’s personality. Im definitely having fun experimenting tho 😄

Dean can be tricky to draw sometimes and I think I have made his lips a bit too pouty here but what are ya gonna do 🤷🏻‍♂️😄 them lips just wanna pout.

The Light Bringer

- the idea for this was an atomic blast, very bright and very beautiful and incredibly deadly 😁 but I’m still trying to figure out how to marry the images of the under painting and the overpainting and i couldn’t figure it out here. (Thinking is hard with a migraine.) so I decided to just save the over painting as one image and save the under painting separately and put them together in a gif. So I used Werble to combine this:

I thought it would be really cool to do both Deaths in the same style, so I took my first picture of Death, mirrored it and drew Billie over the top 😄. I really like how the video shows the transition from the one character to the other. Also this drawing was a prime example of trusting the process. It took me a little while to find the right shapes for Billies features but it all came together in the end. Definitely one of the things that I like about drawing in black and white (which essentially this series is, even tho the ‘white’ of the page is a colourful under painting) is that you can use the smudge tool to push and pull the shading into a better shape. That’s much easier to do when you aren’t working with line art and mixed colours. So it’s great to be able to keep tweaking shapes until I am happier with them. 😄
