Art PSA: If your worried about your art not improving like you want it to, just remember it’s normal for people to improve at different rates. This is due to a variety of reasons and just the fact that people are so different and so many things go into making art. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself, it’ll come with time. Just try to have fun making art and appreciate it as how far you came from the beginning, cause we’re all slowly growing!
I wish my coworkers/friends would realize that even though I’m an artist, I can’t produce artwork whenever I want. In fact, more often than not I’m out of motivation and too stressed to draw because I have a lot going on in my life right now that I need to take care of.
I also don’t understand why people think that just because they meet an artist/become friends with an artist that automatically means they can get free art from them.
Please take into consideration all the time and effort that artists put into their artwork and how long it took them to learn the skills that made them the artist today.
If you were a mechanic and you made a living off of fixing cars, you wouldn’t fix every person you met’s car for free just because they asked, right?
Art is a skill that takes years and years of practice and patience. Quality art supplies can cost an arm and a leg just like any other tools of other career trades.
Please understand that artists are people too and that many of us have to have jobs and work hard to afford our living needs. Sometimes it’s really hard for us to find the time to even draw for ourselves or even take commissions let alone requests for friends or family.
I recently got an overnight full-time job. It’s a lot of hard work and I’ve been really tired and exhausted because of it. My boyfriend and I are in the moving process. We’ll be moving out of state at the end of the month. We’re both working really hard at our full time jobs just so we can afford the move and the rent at our new apartment.
For the past couple of months, my schedule has been sleep in the morning, wake up in the evening, shower, make food, go to work, come home in the morning and sleep again.
I have two days off a week. I try to spend those days trying to relax but I usually end up being sick or packing and cleaning or other errands that I didn’t get to during my work week. If I’m lucky, I’ll have the motivation to do some quick sketches, but other than that I can’t pull myself to do a full fledged drawing.
One of my coworkers that I frequently work with caught me at work on our lunch break the one time I tried sketching in my sketch book. “Wow, you’re really good! You should draw <insert characters> for my kids!”
I told her I wouldn’t have the time or patience to do free art especially since I’m preparing for a move. I hardly have time to draw as it is. “You drew that in like ten seconds! You’ll be able to find the time to do two paintings for my kids before the move!”
Even though I told her many times I don’t do art for free and that I would not have the time or motivation, she still brings it up every time she sees me and I constantly feel pressured to do art for her even though I’ve said no a million times.
This is one of the reasons I really hate drawing out in public. Everyone who sees that I draw usually asks, begs, or demands a drawing. I know I’m not the only one who has this happen to them.
For all of you artists out there who do go through this...
You. Do NOT. HAVE to draw -anything- for -anyone- for free. You do not have to waste your time and effort on someone who does not respect you and what you do.
If you feel uncomfortable with people asking you for art and you feel pressured, you are allowed to walk away. Do not feel obligated to use your talent in a way that makes you feel used or uncomfortable.
General heads up! I will be at the DuPont underground artrave this Sunday (3/8) from 11 to 5! However I'm not going to bring as much stuff as the last two times I've done this - for the simple fact that getting that much glass to and from the venue has been a bit of a logistical nightmare @_@ So if you've on any of my original collages or a particular framed print, please let me know by Friday night, and I can see about bringing it! This won't reserve the piece for you (unless you pay beforehand and this would be a pickup) but at least it'll mean that you don't have me answer you at the table "I'm sorry I left it at home" XD #artrave #dcart #dcartshow #artpsa #seriouslyhowdidnothingbreakthusfar #dupontunderground https://www.instagram.com/p/B9P7quAB0t0/?igshid=kkwi3a96osei

Working. I have a lot to catch up on. I haven’t had time to draw because I’m trying to get work, get some sleep or stop the swelling in my feet. It’s bad man. I miss no responsibilities Aysha.
