The Kennedy Center, Washington, DC, 1971.

Taken close to the time it opened in 1971. Now the pedophile-felon who has attached its own name to the building plans to close the Kennedy Center for "construction." One suspects that may lead to demolition or, almost worse, redecoration in the Home Depot rococo that the felon's aesthetics favor.

While I have never been especially fond of Durrell Stone's building for a list of reasons, not least its location remote from the DC central business district and WMATA Metro stations, it is a building which should be granted historic preservation status as a prime example of mid-century modern, luxe version. The auditoria are quite satisfactory for drama and music performance, and while its basic structure is fairly old, the building has been upgraded on several occasions since 1971. I seriously doubt that it is in bad physical condition as claimed. Its demolition or redecoration would be criminal.
