ANTÉ/BODIES PERFORMANCE SERIES | MAY 3 - 18, 2016
Kimmel Galleries @ NYU | 60 Washington Square South
A series of original performances by the NYU Arts Politics MA Class of 2016 Organized by Sophia Mak & Courtney Brown as part of IN SITE final exhibition
Occurring before, within, and through the body(s) and yet always in relation to an arrival in/to places-times-systems choreographed be-and-fore us. These gestures actualize a disruption of this before, which serves as a contour, border, or perhaps scar. We see ourselves within these constellations. Linguistic blurrings blinking back to us from another time and place, shouting, "See me! Know me! See us! Know us!
Hélèn Cixous writes on terror and satisfaction, scabbing and re(union), "Doù suis-je? Where am I?" The Pixies remind us of an abstract fragility: "Here is my body, hold my bones, hold my bones. Where in my body, hold my bones. Your bones got a little machine."
When asked about performance:
"Performance art takes abstract concepts and turns them into an embodied experience, similar to my experience here in the Arts Politics program." - Cleo Barnett
"On a transactional social level, life is also the performance. In the body and conditions I walk with, I have come to view the world as a space within which I create and am created." - Elizabeth Kipp-Giusti
"There is a level of immediacy that exists in performance that is absent from other forms." - Jenny Rollingstone
With performances by: Cleo Barnett, Courtney Brown, Vanessa Cuervo, Tiffany Fung, Gabe Gordon, Gb Kim, Elizabeth Kipp-Giusti, Sophia Mak, Samira Musa, Weslyn Stephens, Jenny Rollingstone, Lauren Winnenberg, Ivonne Villalon
