First of all, I need so much more detail on why they would not have stayed together. Second, we already knew Aryagon or erarya or whatever that ship is called is basically canon and I knew this but it still hurts lmao

Are you joking? Because there are time zones and this is not funny
(FWI This got way longer than I meant it to get) I’m not going to lie, originally I wasn’t a big fan of Eragon x Arya. Face it, from what we saw, Eragon constantly pined for and harassed Arya, and she just had to put up with it. Then in Brisingr, everything completely changed and Arya was suddenly fond of Eragon! Like every point she had made in Eldest was suddenly dropped! But then I started thinking about it, and especially in regards to Arya’s journey through the books, and Arya’s sudden change in that scene with the spirits made sense. Think about what has happened to her within the last year (which is probably closer to 6 months). First, she watched two of the people she was closest to die. For 15 years she traveled with Glenwing and Faolin, protecting Saphira’s egg. 15 YEARS! And it’s possible Arya knew them even before that, so that she would be traveling with people she trusted. If the severity of the loss of a close friend, and in Faolin’s case, a partner too wasn't bad enough, Arya had to watch these two die and couldn’t do anything. Arya had to protect the egg, it was something they all had to do and had to be willing to sacrifice themselves to do. She has to live with the guilt of “I survived while they died.” She made the choice to choose Saphira's egg over her two close friends. While the odds are slim she could have saved them, there is still a chance that Arya could have, and I'm sure that chance haunted her. Of course she doesn’t want to be close to anyone after that. Heck, Eragon even noticed how distant she acted to other elves, like the ones they met in Ceris. She probably feels toxic to the people she gets close to after this even. And even before that fight with Durza, she has spent so little time with other elves that she is removed. Eragon wouldn’t be any exception to Arya’s feelings of isolation and her introverted tendencies. Then, after WATCHING her two close friends die, she was taken by Durza and tortured. Here, she was beaten and poisoned regularly, which (despite how strong Arya is, both physically and mentally) would leave a long lasting scars on her. Even within the security of Ellesmera, she probably still would wake up with nightmares. The slightest thing could still bring back a flashback. It would make sense that she is tense and very closed off. (I am aware that Arya was shown to be the most at peace in Ellesmera, but there are other instances within the series where it is indicated that she is still very different from the other elves because of her job as ambassador) Given these experiences, it would make sense Arya starts out as a closed off character when we meet her. She doesn’t want to be close to anyone, because that would mean questions she isn’t ready to ask herself, or potentially just getting close to someone in order to loose them again (and face it, Eragon had a higher chance of death that most others in the series). She is processing and grieving and most importantly, is just trying to survive her own recovery. She isn’t capable of emotionally supporting anyone else until she can emotionally support herself. So why the change in Brisingr? She decides to trust Eragon and Saphira. Think about how vulnerable Eragon is in that scene. It is a one on one scene between Eragon and Arya, no Saphira around to break the tension or to give Eragon some common sense. It’s Arya’s opportunity to see Eragon how he really is, by himself, and after all that he has been through. This scene is important because it indicates that Arya has begun to heal. She trust herself enough not to fear her emotions and what they may do. She is allowing herself to open up the Eragon for the first time since Durza attacked. She is lowering her barriers and guards in the hopes that Eragon might be someone who can help her heal and feel normal again. She has acknowledged that Eragon is a friend she cares about and she will feel pain if he dies, but she will feel even more pain by denying herself a friendship and potentially more. Arya had to asks if the potential pain of loss greater than the pain of isolation and that nagging "what if?" And I think in that scene with the spirits, she finally changed her answer. Arya is an incredibly deep and complex character who deserves recognition for all the trauma she has had to survive and the lasting effects of that trauma and her relationship with Eragon shows us her path to recovery.
“You still feel the same?” Arya was close enough that her breath fanned hotly across his lips.
It took a moment for Eragon to understand the question (more of a statement, really), and another moment to string together a coherent response. The usually light but distinct scent of pine needles that always clung to Arya felt thick and heady, but he managed to force an answer through his suddenly dry mouth. “You know my true name. You know my feelings have not changed.”
Arya whispered his true name so quietly he barely caught it over the sound of their breathing. Even if he hadn’t heard her, there was no mistaking the cold, but not unpleasant, shiver that ran down his spine and down to his toes.
He spoke her true name in response, perhaps even more quietly than she had spoken his, and their souls hung bare between them.
Arya/Eragon aesthetic
I have this Aryagon headcanon that they danced together during the festivities in Ellesméra before he left Alagäesia
