A simple search for the keyword 'disability' brings up a list of Netflix movies that were clearly not created with a positive image of disability. In...
Full disclosure: my best friend is an ASAN-KC member:
Autistic Self Advocacy Network - Kansas City has a petition up on change.org (which I have linked to) requesting Netflix to add some movies by disabled filmmakers about disability.
Why? Because Netflix already has plenty of films that depict various disabilities as pitiable afflictions to be overcome. Films made by able bodied filmmakers who fetishize suffering.
If only there were some films made by disabled people that gave an accurate depiction of various disabilities. Films like the ones on this list, maybe?
ASAN is not asking Netflix to remove the films they find distasteful. They are only asking that the actually representative films be added. You, the consumer, can continue to not watch the films by disabled filmmakers you previously didn't even have the option of ignoring. Look at how empowered you've become by this petition.
Cutting it short, then. Peace, friends.
