In case you didn’t have enough reasons by now, what with the main characters being pirates and the three examples of marine officers up until now being complete pricks and also All Sea Cops Are Bastards, another reason the World Government is bad is that they don’t seem to have a very good pension. Although...

Bellemere is shown in chapter zero, taking place twelve years before this, as a marine officer of at least the rank of Captain, although we never learn her exact rank. She found Nami and Nojiko nine or ten years before this flashback, so assuming she wasn’t immediately hired in as a marine, she had to have served at least two years. Even if she retired early, she was still an officer in the world military at the age of eighteen. She should have enough to take care of herself, especially since she also works a tangerine farm.

But we don’t get any indication that Bellemere gets anything from the World Government. We also don’t get word that she still works for them while raising her kids. I think there’s a high chance that our favorite lesbian marine officer went AWOL when she found the kids. Either that, or she cut off her tour before being eligible for lifetime benefits. OR OR OR

I am starting to think that maybe Bellemere was legally marked dead on that fateful day. Do the marines even know one of their own is still alive out there?
