Demons, chapter 36: Destiny
CONTENT WARNING for panic attacks, an autistic meltdown, and both external and internalized ableism.
“Well, it’s great to see you,” says Spinnerella, not even a touch of irony in her voice or smile. Are these two seriously married? “How are things in Dryl?”
“Um… fine?” Adora fidgets, somehow shrinking further. “My old squad joined us, so we’ve been getting them settled in.”
”We heard,” remarks Netossa. Adora must not be imagining the slight edge in her tone, because Spinnerella gives her a look and she sighs, rephrasing her comment. “It must be nice, having everyone back together.”
“It is,” Adora says flatly, arms crossing as she stares her down. That’s closer to the welcome she was expecting from Netossa, though why she’s even trying to be nice is beyond Adora.
“Hey!” Swift Wind’s cheery voice breaks the tension as he bounds up to them. Adora can’t help but smile as he leans in to nuzzle her cheek, prompting her to wrap her arms around his neck. “There’s my sacred partner in crime-bashing!” he greets her overenthusiastically, even for him. “How you been?”
“Uh, fine?” she says, pulling back and eyeing him warily.

The Alliance is nice to Adora and it's weird. Entrapta has a dream come true. A devastating truth sends Adora into a tailspin.
It’s not like there’s no case for it (there really is), but at least me and @malachi-walker are honest about our inspiration for autistic!Adora
God there’s another autistic solidarity scene in the upcoming chapter of Demons and it’s so painful watching two neurodivergent people having an awkward conversation. All the body language is making me tense just writing it.
Headcanon: Adora’s autistic and loves snuggling with Catra because a) weight on her chest, b) nice comforting rumbling noises and feelings, and c) soft fur to stroke. Catra enjoys the attention and affection and Adora gets to stim, so it’s a win-win.
Demons, chapter 24: Socialization
Trying not to sound too eager, Adora casually inquires, “What can you tell me about Catra?”
“How long do you have?” deadpans Entrapta.
“Probably like five minutes at this point, right?” guesses Adora. When Entrapta keeps staring at her with that same expression, something clicks. “Oh. That was a joke.”
“Yes.” Entrapta flashes a grin, eyes sparkling with mischief. “Despite popular belief, I can in fact make jokes.” Keep reading
Adora and Entrapta bond unexpectedly on their journey to Bright Moon, where they find themselves fighting an uphill battle for understanding and reconciliation.
I just gotta say I am thrilled that everybody loved Demons 24 so much, tbh I was worried people would be bored or frustrated to have another solo chapter, or even that I might get some ableist feedback because it pretty much screams autistic Adora. But everyone has been so lovely and excited about exploring the parallels between her and Entrapta and the potential of their friendship so this is awesome. I know it can be hard to be patient in slow burn fics but there is so much to work through, you know?

I never thought of the fixation of watching others, to make a conscious effort to learn the patterns of body language of someone else as a characteristics of autism, I mean what do I know, but it just put so much into perspective, this chapter I don't have words of what it is, nor have processed it entirely, I don't know I just thought I was just smart? Sensitive? But Adora, Adora didn't know.
Yeah, I don’t think it’s only a characteristic of autism, and there are definitely autistics out there who don’t even try. But I think a good chunk of female autistics have had this experience where they have catalogued typical behavior and used it as a front, i.e. “masking.” People don’t always consciously do it and write down their discoveries, though - Entrapta does that because she’s a scientist. I think what’s interesting in that scene is the contrast of someone who does it without conscious effort and someone who does.
