sometimes i think about what people think of when they hear the words 'video game'. like, what first pops into your head
i know a lot of people would say shit like mario, sonic... zelda... maybe something more recent like halo or minecraft... or indie titles like undertale or super meat boy...
i think i might be in the minority when i say the first thing i think of is kirby.
i was a kid during this story--7 years old. the world was still a pretty bright place, but my parents had fought a lot when i was younger and my dad had a car accident that year. and i was frustrated about video games. sure I'd played loads of old computer games, and i had pokemon yellow and an n64 with snap, but video games as a whole were frustrating to me. i didn't play pokemon snap well and i remember that i wanted dad to just... get rid of the n64 because i got too frustrated over snap.
then one day--it was winter, i remember that, cold as hell--we went to the local video rental place. usually I'd rent a game there even if i got frustrated. and that's when i saw it--a blue box with a smiling pink face on it, with rounded friends.
kirby 64. god, i just... had a feeling about it, y'know? it's the feeling you get when something is just... right. i rented it, and i remember my dad buying me the latest nintendo power too, which had kirby 64 as the cover game--nice coincidental timing. we went home, i put the game in the n64, and i fell in love instantly.
i rented it god knows how many times. it was my very favourite game to rent; it was the first game i ever fell in love with. i tried every power, got all the shards, adored every song and every world. it was the first game i ever beat myself, without my dad holding my hand the entire way through. i was so proud, so enamoured with the world and everyone in it, and kirby fast became my favourite game character of all time, making me realize just how fun games could be if i put in the effort to beat them myself and didn't get frustrated. i never actually owned the cart--and when the rental place closed, that was the end of that. no more kirby 64 for me.
until the wii virtual console, but whatever.
that was the first game i ever loved. kirby 64 means a hell of a lot to me. it's always going to. it brings me back to a time when a game i loved was rare indeed, when something so small could capture my imagination in a huge way, and when the fate of a virtual world felt like my own fate, too.
happy 18th, kirby 64. you're still one of my favourite games of all time, and I'll still be playing you for years to come.
