i think rocky learns about human choral performances and the science behind them, how people's breaths and heartbeats synchronize when singing together, and although it's not a thrum, per se, it's still a moment of connection between the many that comes together to make one thing, one sound, one message. i think rocky gets emotional knowing that despite everything, despite light years and anatomical differences, there's still many voices joined as one to make something beautiful. yeah, math may be a universal language, but everything sings. everything sings.

Elaborating more on why I find this so striking: so we all know that Weir kind of sucks. And I think most of us are aware that the PHM novel was intended as Weir's self-insert story, about a man who is tragically misunderstood and betrayed by an Earth which doesn't value him, and makes an idealised male friendship among the stars and leaves Earth forever. And how, due to Weir's complete lack of self-awareness, the story instead becomes the story of a man who is chronically unable to recognise when people value him, and deliberately self-isolates and shields himself from his own lonliness with logic. I think we all know this.

But building on this, the two directors of the PHM movie saw this read, prioritised it over Weir's intended read as both more accurate and more compelling, and built the movie around that read as a basis. Particularly striking to me is a moment from an interveiw about the movie's score. One of the directors says that, intially, they tried ominous and scary music to accompany Grace waking up on the ship, but it didn't feel right. So they instead alighted on a piece of music that said, in the director's words: "Poor thing. He's going to be alright. He just doesn't know it yet."

This quote is hugely important to me, because it underpins the dialogue between the book and the movie, and can almost be interpreted as a direct dialogue between Weir and the directors. Weir writes a book that says: here is the world. It rejects me, and I don't feel valued. I deserve better than this, and instead of examining why, I choose to externalise the blame. And the director, another man, but one with a more healthy mindset, looks at this worldveiw that Weir has presented to him and says "poor thing. you're going to be alright."

So this is why saying "Project Hail Mary is answering the question…. can adult men make friends if the universe is depending on it" is funny to me: because it's acknowledging that dialogue between them in a very explicit way that leaves little room for interpretation. It's acknowledging that this is about adult men having issues with making friends and forging emotional connections, due to their own self-imposed limitations, and thereby also acknowledging that Weir has these limitations. It's very bold. And the funniest thing is, for it to have made it into the cut, it must've flown completely over Weir's head.

mmm cant stop thinking about this post, specifically that grace is the only one who wants physical touch but that rocky engages in it for grace's sake. it's such an awesome lens to remember to view rocky's actions through because he really is bending over backwards to make grace comfortable.

i love rocky having no natural desire or drive for touch, and i love the thought of him developing one during the trip to erid. humans need touch and rocky will move heaven and earth to give grace whatever he needs.

i can see rocky coming to resent the xenonite barrier because the lack of direct contact hurts grace. getting frustrated with himself because he knows it's not rational and that grace is being stupid stupid whenever he bumps the panels and sighs that he wishes they weren't there. want grace rocky to die painful, question?! but even after he waves grace off he sits and ponders how to make the panels thinner, more flexible, pushing the limits of eridian technology.

i can see him starting to yearn for closeness so he can cure grace's "touch starvation." the form-fitting suit was built so nothing like what happened on adrian will ever happen again and so when the hail mary starts to complain about her old age he can patch her up. but of course the moment the suit's passed rocky's stress tests grace is throwing his arms around him and rocky has a long long long long long to-do list but he'd rather rip his carapace in half than end the hug a second before grace is full.

he doesn't care about touch. it does nothing for him and means nothing to him. touch is also the single most important problem he has to solve. eridians can make food, eridians can replicate earth, but eridians can never press their carapace against human flesh.

listening to grace waste away, listening to him curl up against the xenonite, listening to him trying to hide his tears as he warbles about how he wishes things were different makes him want to break through the airlock again.

touch has no significance to eridians, but rocky still scoots closer.

It's just like watching each other sleep is for Grace. He doesn't inherently desire it but he does it because it makes his friend happy, and after a while it becomes comforting in its familiarity and shared experience
