To not even be present when Those Who Slither in the Dark were vanquished. To not even be present to finally hear the truth of things from Rhea. To live off of just second hand accounts here, banished to a remote part of her own former Empire, left to wither and die from the anger and pain burning deep in her blood...

Not for the first time, Edelgard wished that Constance had let her die the day that Enbarr fell. That she’d never written that impulsive letter to try and gain some closure of her own, that it had not reached Constance before her death. Or that it hadn’t affected the blonde to such an extreme desire as to actually drive her to save the Emperor before the Professor’s blade could fall.

“Exiled forever, pain of death should I leave the premises, relinquish all power and titles...” Edelgard gave a deep sigh. She couldn’t really argue against it, either - she deserved all of this and worse.

She should have spoken to the others before starting her war. The fact that Claude’s path was accomplishing her dream in a far more open way was...enlightening, and humbling. Infuriating as well, she supposed. He would get all the credit for uniting the continent, yet it would never have happened had she not taken her first steps.

Ruthless, yes. But she had always viewed them as necessary, and she doubted she would ever be talked down from that. But at least it was over and she could watch at least a kind of her dream form from the ashes she’d turned Fodlan to. With whatever scant time she had before her Uncle’s experiments finally claimed her life.

If she was kind...she would estimate two years, maybe another three. She had a feeling the number of people who would mourn her early death could be counted on one hand, and one of them was present with her now, having just passed the final decree.

“I suppose with Rhea gone the church no longer has a reason to call for my head.” She folded the letter neatly between her shaking fingers and passed it back to Constance. “Seteth may even see a kind of poetry in this fate. Forced into hiding without power in a distant corner of the world...just like their race was.”

She shook her head with a sigh. “You shouldn’t have saved me, Constance. Now you have nothing to do but play a glorified prison warden until I pass away.”
