When Wallace, who we lost last year to COVID-19, was in a talking mood, he was eloquent and revealing; his memory was rich in detail. This piece focuses on his very important relationships with Miles Davis and Tony Williams. A rare and fascinating glimpse into this wonderful and multi-faceted personality.

Found: Another Lost Album of John Coltrane

Nate Chinen’s thoroughly researched story on the new John Coltrane Quartet (yes, new) release chronicles the long-rumored soundtrack that the quartet recorded for a Canadian film le Chat Dans Le Sac. It gets better and better: the tapes were discovered; they were recorded at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio soon after the completion of the quartet’s masterpiece Crescent; they contain a variety of Coltrane originals from an earlier era. Just as the quartet’s live interpretations of Blue Train and Mr. PC were fascinating and illuminating, so are these remakes made at the request of the film’s director Gilles Groulx.

Twenty Great Jazz Reads

Sam Armstrong’s list of 20 great books on jazz is an excellent list. It doesn’t aim to cover the range of jazz history but to select the books that pull you vividly into era at hand. I’d quibble a bit about Miles Davis’s autobiography, which has a lot of misremembered moments and entries that I doubt Miles said, but on the whole, it is quite worthwhile. Here you’ll discover the great writers like Dan Morgenstern, Nat Hentoff and Richard Williams and pursue their work beyond this list.
