Lucky Beach, Hoi An, Vietnam
When you head to Hoi An, you hear a lot about the Historic Old Town there, the lovely lanterns, the scenic boat rides and the famous cao lau noodles. But despite it being a coastal town, you don’t hear too much about seafood. However, on a Japanese travel blog, Mutsumi found a write-up about a restaurant called Lucky Beach up near An Bang Beach that was supposed to have amazing fish dishes, so we took the 10 minute cab ride over to try them out...
Honestly, calling this place a restaurant is a bit of a stretch. We discovered that like many of the eateries along An Bang Beach, LB is a private home on the beachfront where the owners, the Hanh family, added tables to their front porch and built a gazebo in their backyard to make some money off their prized property...
You basically walk through their house to get to the beach, with a look inside the kids’ rooms and hanging laundry along the way, and are rewarded with a lovely scenic seat where you can dine on their seafood specialties...
The reason we focused on Lucky Beach over a few of the other options in the area is that the Hanh family is a family of fisherman who own their own boat and sell the seafood they bring in themselves every day. (Or at least that’s what they say they do.) But in any case, we had an excellent late lunch here one lazy afternoon. Here’s a look...
Scallops grilled with lemongrass, garlic, scallions and peanuts...
I thought they'd be bigger, but turned out to be bay scallops...
Delicious!!
Grilled squid with tamarind, another winner...
Whole “Vietnamese orange fish”, as described by Mrs. Hanh, the daughter. A lovely, meaty fish, pulled from the water hours earlier by her dad, she explained. Served with a housemade dipping sauce that it really didn’t even need...
Our trip to Lucky Beach was a wonderful way to spend a relaxing afternoon having brunch and beers while watching the waves, away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Hoi An. The Hanh family are lovely people who welcomed us in, fed us fantastic, fresh food, and made us feel like part of their family for a few hours. Oh, and the meal you see above, along with four beers and a bottle of water, only cost us 14 bucks!
