How #StarringJohnCho Changed Hollywood At a time where Hollywood was turning a blind eye to diversity, #StarringJohnCho challenged the notions of American casting. In 2017, Scarlett Johansson was cast as Motoko Kusanagi in Ghost in the Shell, igniting major uproar. “The original film is set in Japan, and the major cast members are Japanese. So why would the American remake star a white actress?” William Yu, the creator of the movement, started posting his #StarringJohnCho creations on Twitter. Soon, the internet ran with it. The hashtag is flooded with brilliantly photoshopped movie posters that made John Cho the star lead. From action films such as The Avengers, to rom-coms like 500 Days of Summer, the renditioned posters showcased a new perspective on casting and pointed out the fatal flaws of the industry. From internet meme to global movement, #StarringJohnCho amplified the demand for Asian representation. "The timing of this campaign was so perfect, in the sense that Asian Americans were ready to assert themselves and the public at large was probably primed to accept the idea in a way they hadn't before." -John Cho "The campaign wasn't just about John, and it wasn't just about money. Yes, diverse films do better finacially and are better returns on investment. But it's also the case that great films and built around great characters [that also showcase our humanity.] Our passions. Our pains. Our dreams. Ok. I think we need to have a little talk about Asian representation in western media because this is just so damn ridiculous. EVERY single Disney live action that has come out over the past few years has been faithful to the source material to a "T". Every. Single. One. They even embellished a little bit, giving Cinderella's prince , you know, an actual personality. Why is it that the ONLY film to feature an all-asian cast AND a romantic Asian male lead suddenly having huge casting changes where literally main characters are being cut out of the film? It seems really unfair and shows that Hollywood is still so freaking blind to what people want. Please don't tell me "oh, well there just aren't any actors in Hollywood that could play Sheng." I could give you a dozen off the top of my head. The only reason there aren't many young "prominent" Asian actors (despite the fact there is no shortage of them) is because nobody is casting them! How the hell are people supposed to gain notoriety if the only roles they can get are either racist stereotypes or so minor they can't even put it on a CV? And the years and years American mass media spent trying to emasculate Asian men for their own political purposes has to finally be acknowledged. I am tired of friends, colleagues and classmates being seen as outdated stereotypes that hold no actual merit. Propaganda is poweful kids. We also have to stop over-sexualizing Asian females please. They are not some little exotic commodity for you to get off on, and they deserve to have heroes on the screen that are powerful and complex just like everyone else. I don't know why Disney decided to go this way, it makes me really upset that I wont get to see not only Sheng, but several other characters from the original film, including the villain because they felt the need go change that too😑 It's shit like this that makes me realize why I want to work in film, whether in casting or as a screenwriter, because I want to create roles for minorities and also ensure that the big executives don't make stupid decisions like this one.
