I’ve only been here three days but everyone already knows me- I can see it all over their faces. The greeting here is “Moin Moin” which still tastes funny on my tongue so I usually just smile or mutter “Tag” under my breath. My arrival has increased the number of Americans here by 50%. When you see the same 50 people every day- you can be sure you notice the new one- especially when they’re walking in the goddamn bike lane. Tourists these days...
My housemates are lovely and seem to be happy to have fresh blood and some new dinner ideas. (I also suggest bringing hot sauces along for optimal popularity ratings).
The grocery an aisle devoted to rotkohl and another to museli. The alcohol is blissfully cheap (Italian wine for a euro or less), and there’s apricot in their orange juice. Just lovely. The American Hamburger flavored Margarine is less so.
There is a small corner, about 3 rows, devoted to international foods. 1/3 is devoted to jarred Spanish olives, 1/3 to Mexican food (taco seasoning, hard shells, and “zesty sauce”) and the last 1/3 for Asia. This section includes sushi rice, 5 Euro seaweed, and a small set up spices- two curry, and one “Asian spice.”
