OOO! seven days in june (tia williams) i think was a really good flashback-to-present story i think the way it was written really added a lot to the romance and dynamic + same with people we meet on vacation (emily henry)

also, intersecting storylines a very much a favourite in the fantasy genre i think for me & wheel of time does this so insanely well 

126. your favourite spring read

hm.. not really sure what classifies as a spring read i'm very much a read what i want when i want, but i think in the spirit no more winter sadness and just serotonin boost, last spring i read hani and ishu's guide to fake dating (adiba jaigirdar) and wow!!! was it cute!!!

again, horrible with trying to figure out what this means but i read dowry of blood (s.t. gibson) in oct/nov last year and i think the vibes are very much that (vampires? that's all)

i haven’t read any i loved THAT much (i’ve pretty much given all the ones i’ve read like a solid 3 stars) i think maybe this just isn’t my genre but i want to read more by gillian flynn? also a flicker in the dark was okay too

I just wanted to ask about Marlowe, and his character in general!!! They just seemed so interesting, and I just love to know all about them!!

Yes of course!! Marlowe is my darling and I adore talking about her.

They were first created for a curse of Strahd dnd that centred around amnesia and horror. In it Marlowe was incredibly paranoid, untrusting and often caused interpersonal conflicts due to it. He had a lot of trauma around being controlled and gaslit and was terrified of people using her. All the whole she was being very heavily manipulated by a figure called Dusk, a corrupted wizard who looked like a shadowy tiefling.

Marlowe eventually escaped Barovia thanks to Dusk who pulled him into the feywilds instead. She spent two years there, continuing to be manipulated by Dusk and doing his bidding (side note on Dusk: he was essentially trying to ascend into godhood and would use Marlowe as an accessory to murder to do so. Marlowe would curse people for Dusk and with each curse Marlowe would gain a new eye tattoo somewhere on their body.)

What Marlowe didn't know is that he actually had ties to an archfey, dubbed Patron, who after getting tired of Dusk, helped Marlowe to contain Dusk in a witch bottle. In trade for the help, Marlowe paid with his memories, once more being an amnesiac with only a memory of a past friend who he then spent his days looking for again: Euphoria.

Marlowe found Euphoria again in time (Context: they were party members in CoS and were pining for one another but had a lot of issues) and is living far more happily and healthily with him.

Marlowe is interesting to me because depending which "form" he's in, his personality varies. Original Marlowe pre any amnesia is very broken and corrupt, he wanted magic he wanted power and she would have done anything for it. 1st amnesia (aka Barovia) Marlowe is passive and argumentative and incredibly secretive, but they were also just scared and afraid because they had no understanding of what was truly happening or why. Then you have current Marlowe (2nd amnesia/post Dusk) who is so trusting she's naive. She doesn't have the memories of their trauma to actually cause all the anger and fear so instead her need for power and passion for arcana comes across in a pleasant curiosity.

In a very elevator pitch means, Marlowe's character is all about trust, internal acceptance, and an inherent need to be cared for, both by himself and by another.

There is so so much more I could say about Marlowe, so many things about her life and origin and story. I have AUs that explore other aspects of her personality more in-depth, like an AU where he never left Barovia and how the fear and distrust would have transformed, what kind of person he would have been if Dusk hadn't been stopped etc.

I love her so much, but I hope that answered your question some what akfjskf

3. a stand-alone that you wish was part of a series

genuinely, i can't think of a single one.. like a lot of the standalones i read are romance-y and they don't really need a sequel. however, if you ask me if there are any series i wish were simply left as standalones, well........
