"Thank you for inviting me, I had a lot of fun..." Maeve to Andy
Ever since his dad passed away, Andy and his mom still enjoyed American Thanksgiving, but now it was only ever them. Some years, they flew to Nevada (where his dad was born), others they had both sets of grandparents join them, and there were a time or two where they also even had his friends over. For the last five years, though, his mother took off work and they celebrated alone. It was just another way to honor his dad’s memory, since he loved the holiday and cooking so much.
Andy had been nervous to ask his mom if Maeve could join them this year, but luckily she enthusiastically agreed. Then he was nervous to ask Maeve if she wanted to come, which was also for nothing. His girlfriend and mother had met a handful of times sporadically and very quickly, so this would be their first time actually spending time together. He really, really wanted the two of them to get to know each and like each other.
He genuinely couldn’t keep the smile off his face the whole day. The last time Andy enjoyed the holiday so much was back when his dad was alive, and even today compared to some of his better memories. “Thank you for coming.” Andy murmured, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. The two of them were cuddling on the couch now that his mom left for the night shift.
“I feel like today always felt a little more sad then happy since my dad passed...” Andy admitted, his voice already strained. He hadn’t cried once today, but he knew it was bound to happen whenever he thought about his dad. “It’s hard not to think about him and miss him so much. He loved to spend the day in the kitchen and watch all the Thanksgiving episodes from his favorite shows...being all cheesy and stuff. He would’ve been so excited that I was bringing you home today...”
Andy blinked away some tears, pausing so he could regain some composure. It wasn’t the first time Maeve saw him cry, but he didn’t want her to think he was sad now. “What I’m, uh, trying to say is that I had a lot of fun too and a year ago that didn’t even seem possible for today.” He smiled down at her, even with his glassy eyes. “My mom wouldn’t make things weird, but I know she feels the same way too.”
