"Ha, yeah," she said, her laugh throaty. It honestly wasn't the first time Andy had heard that. "I'm great at not being what people expect," she went on, vague amusement in her voice and a little smile to match.

She took a long second to take him in, her eyebrows lifting as she looked him over.

Hmm. Not bad at all.

Andy's smile grew a bit and she shrugged. "I'm not your average witch," she answered, hand on her hip, hardly modest.

     Her anger was still fresh, though somewhat tamped down. At least purple sparks weren’t flying from her fingertips anymore. Her powers were often tied with her emotions, so control in the face of rage was totally necessary—especially when the source of that rage was her very own sister. Oh, and the danger of a telekinetic blow hurting innocent people—like it had with that lamp—added a pretty strong tally to the control column too.

     “It’s nothing. Don’t worry about it.” But it wasn’t nothing, not to her. She huffed, shook her head, and launched into it. He didn’t need to twist her arm about it. “My sister is such a little” —Andy brought her hands up, strangling the air— “brat!”

Andy let out a short laugh, folding her arms across her chest. "A threat? No. Trust me—you'd know if I were threatening you." The sigil she'd drawn in the air had glowed briefly in purple and red before fading away once the spell washed over her. "Unless you think a protection ward is a threat."

It was late in the afternoon, one of the slower days at Embers & Ashes. Andy was again considering closing an hour early so she could head to the grocery store for more cat food for the beasts waiting on her at home. The radio behind the counter had its volume up, Bon Jovi's "Living on a Prayer" playing. Andy sang along as she went for the broom for a final sweep up.

Oh, should probably turn the sign around, she thought. She brought up her hand to telekinetically do so, when she saw Ayesha step in through the door, bells ringing merrily.

"Hey, you. Wasn't expecting you today." They had a tentative schedule now, where Andy worked with her on controlling her abilities. "Or did I forget?" Either way, the sign flipped over and the door locked. She turned down the radio. Embers & Ashes was officially closed for the day.

Then she saw Ayesha carried something and it smelled heavenly. Immediately, Andy's smile grew wider. "Did you bring me a food present?"

The second she heard the word pretty, her mouth twisted into a little smirk. "Do you really think so?" The words were meant to be humble, or some facsimile of humble, but Andy's tone and smile said otherwise. She was pretty and she knew it.

Of course, Andy had to tease. "I was going for sexy beyond all reason, but I'll take pretty."

She shrugged a little, which made her curled hair fall over her bare shoulder. "There's an event tonight at the Kindheart Coven. Mom insists I need to be there." She rolled her eyes, stuck out her tongue to express her displeasure at that, but a smile soon brightened her face. "I get to play dress-up for a couple of hours and drink at an open bar so I don't mind it too much."

She smoothed the front of the soft-blue maxi dress, adjusted the flowing skirt. Andy looked down, then brought her gaze back to Ayesha. The smile she gave her was a little more subdued as she considered her.

"You know, if this thing was a plus-one event, I'd ask you to be my date in a heartbeat."

Andy's laugh held an edge as rough as sandpaper, sharper than her fangs. "You may have had the instinct to protect me, but I never needed your protection."

Besides, that was a lifetime ago. Or Andy's, at least.

Her bloodied mouth moved to a grin. "What's your instinct now? Still wanna protect me?"

"Isn't it though?"

Andy tried to hide her fangy grin by biting her lower lip, but that didn't last long. Blue eyes deliberately swept over Nilza, lingering on her lips for a few seconds longer.

"I thought you liked danger," she commented. "And I don't have to be your enemy, you know. We could kiss and make up... or fuck and make up."

“We can’t go to the club for your birthday. You’re like, really old. Might throw your back out,” Nilza said, fully prepared to have to dodge.

Andy's reaction was immediate—a gasp, then exaggerated indignation, and finally the hurling of an object. The hairbrush went flying at Nilza. Luckily for her, Andy's aim was off, and she hadn't used telekinesis to compensate. The hairbrush harmlessly struck the bathroom door.

"How dare you," she said, with a laugh. "Watch it or I'll turn you into something horrid." She scoffed. "Really old my ass."
