I recently wrote an article for Ask.Audio about the different ways you can get into music tech DIY and hacking - everything from graphical programming, creative coding platforms, beginner friendly microcontrollers, DIY audio hardware platforms, hackable musical devices, and music hack events. Read the article here.
Earlier this week Blokas introduced their Raspberry Pi audio/MIDI interface pisound on Indiegogo, and I was lucky enough to get hold of a unit a few weeks ago to write a review of it for Ask.Audio. It’s a really good piece of kit that I thoroughly recommend, and at over 200% funded on Indiegogo already it seems I’m not the only person who recognises its powerful specs. You can check out the review here.
Oh AI, how we love thee and are afraid of thee in equal measure. Google’s Brain Team are using machine learning in the form of Magenta to create original music
This is a very Google solution. Just as Google is an database of existing web pages Magenta creates it’s music from a database of existing notes in a MIDI file. So it it derivative rather than original.
All music is derivative to a degree as human composers base their work of existing pieces but there are still composers which leap outside the conventions.
A database of conventions can only create conventional music.

My latest Ask Audio article, this time talking about 6 of the best DIY alternative instrument makers - Diego Stocco, Moldover, Eric Singer, Reed Ghazala, Bart Hopkin and Ajay Kapur. These guys are my heroes, and I hope to one day be able to create something similar to the amazing instruments they have built. Check out the article here.
I recently wrote an article for Ask.Audio Magazine offering my two cents about how The Internet of Things could impact music composition, production and performance in the near future. Give it a read here.
