Have you ever come across a song and think. This actually fits a character of mine?

All the time! Actually the entire World of Looming Gaia series was inspired by the music of Devin Townsend, way back in 2011. I sneaked a reference to his lyrics into each story to pay homage to that. Some references are more obvious than others. Even some of the story titles are lyrics of his ("Ocean Returns to the Sea" and "Celestial Signals").

A lot of the characters, the environments, and many of the plotlines came together while I was listening to his music. I don't always remember what song inspired what specific thing, but I'll list the songs I associate with different characters, arcs, and concepts and you can interpret them yourself. ;)

Do you have any voices in mind for the Looming Gaia characters? I imagine Ginger sounding like Pearl from Steven Universe for some reason. Idk why...

Woah that’s a perfect voice for her now that you mention it! Personally I always thought she’d sound like Mrs. Brisby from Secret of Nimh, but Pearl is great too!

I have a few voices in mind. I’ll include Youtube links for examples. Itchy’s voice is described as “gruff” or “scratchy” in the series, so I think he’d probably have a Kurt Cobain thing going on.

I can’t imagine anyone else but Angela Gossow as Elska,

I think Mr. Ocean’s voice was described as soft-spoken but raspy/sickly at some point, so something akin to Chino Moreno maybe? Or just Salad Fingers. That works too.

I think Courtney Love and Gwen Stefani have fitting voices for Alaine. Both are kind of nasally, spunky, and tomboyish in a way.

Speaking of Steven Universe, I think Estelle (Garnet) has a good voice for Jeimos.

I’ve had a few voices in mind for Evan, but lately I’ve been stuck on Roger Clark, who played Arthur Morgan in RDR2. I don’t imagine Evan having Arthur’s thick American accent, but sounding more like Roger’s natural speaking voice. I think it’s the perfect blend of smooth and gruff for a big sweet lycanthrope dude. Someone once said they imagined Patrick Warburton voicing Evan, which I think is also a good fit.

Lukas probably sounds similar to Trevor Belmont from the Netflix Castlevania series.

Linde can sound like nothing less than a Disney Princess. How ‘bout Mulan? I think Tara Strong could be appropriate too.

Dave King from Flogging Molly is my first choice for Glenvar. And you might laugh at me for my second choice, but hear me out…Vinesauce Joel. The roughness mixed with the slight Swedish accent just works imo.

Zeffer…Peter Steele. Not his deep singing voice, but his normal speaking voice.

I can’t get David Bowie’s voice out of my head whenever I’m writing Dario. I think his performance as the Goblin King is perfect for him, it has that elegant yet threatening and vaguely douchey quality to it.

Tress Mcnielle doing her Agnes voice is spot-on for Morbus imo. A similar voice would work for Calamity too.

I forgot her name, but the actress who played Sally Acorn in that old Sonic cartoon had a really distinct voice that fits Flora super well.

I remember MetallicaFangirl suggested that the guy who plays Zuko in Avatar would be a good fit for Connor. I think so too!

Balthazaar sounds similar to Sgt. Hatred in my head. I don’t know why.

Those are just some stand-out voices I tend to imagine while I’m writing dialogue, but if anyone has more suggestions I’d love to hear them!

I love stuff like this, thank you so much for sharing! I'm only familiar with a couple of these songs, but from what I know they are indeed accurate to the characters! I'm going to see if I can find the rest and check them out too. I'm always looking for new music to listen to!

Morganya: Diamanda Galas - O Death (Diamanda was actually the inspiration for Morganya's vibes and aesthetic. This song in particular captures the character's misery and creepiness!)

Isaac: Mr. Bungle - Golem II The Bionic Vapour Boy (literally about a boy made from clay)

Zeffer: Dog Fashion Disco - Gardenia (His paranoia causes him to kill damn near everyone he meets, he knows he's losing his sanity but doesn't know how to stop it)

Lilian: Depeche Mode - Lilian (from the perspective of Zeffer and Dario)

What kind of music and instruments are popular in each kingdom?

Good question! However it's a hard one to answer, because within most Great Kingdoms are many different regions, and within those regions are many different peoples, and those peoples are further divided into different cultures which may prefer the sounds of very different instruments.

For example, within Matuzu Kingdom you have a region called the Midland Jungle. Uekoro and Iwezi are two different territories in this jungle with two very different cultures. Drums are the most popular instrument in Uekoro, while the sitar is most popular in Iwezi. In fact, it's believed that the Iwezites invented the sitar. But you will rarely hear a sitar in Uekoro, because the Uekoran people just don't value the sound of that instrument like the Iwezites do.

That said, if I had to simplify the answer down to one or two instruments per kingdom...

Folkvar: Lute

Matuzu: Flute

Lamai: Rattle

Yerim-Mor: Didgeridoo

Zareen: Electric guitar, brasses

Evangeline: Piano, accordion

Mogdir: Zither

Etios: Drum, pan pipes
