BETA READERS CALL !

do you like horror, polyamory and the tense of atmosphere of small towns? then i have good news for you: i'm looking for an unlimited number of beta readers for my 98k words novel, a strange kind of hunger.

SYNOPSIS —

1853. sweetwater, massachusetts, swallows people whole. dr. jonathan fallow thought he escaped its grip four years ago, but he finds himself back in its clutches, as winter creeps in.

sweetwater swallows people whole, but it seems to be in the maw of something else. tracks in the forest; mutilated cattle; a howling chorus. the townsfolk are quick to cry devil, encouraged by their firebrand pastor, gabriel goodwin. jonathan is determined to prove that the creatures lurking in the woods are wolves, nothing more — but a night vigil and a glimpse of something horrifying force him to reconsider.

to expose the rotting heart of the village, he’ll have to form an alliance with a faceless traveller, a disgraced former surgeon — and the pastor’s beautiful younger brother.

( trigger/content warnings: gore, body horror, familial abuse (largely off-page), religious abuse/trauma. a more in-depth list of warnings for each chapter will be available on request )

A STRANGE KIND OF HUNGER — COMPLETE !

this is an extremely belated post, but i finally finished the third draft of a strange kind of hunger! it's been about a week, and i still don't really know what to do with myself. i started working on it at the start of the year, and it's been my mainstay for eight months — through the end of my first year of university, teaching strikes, the death of my granddad and a 10-day sailing expedition... and it's done. wow! it capped out at 98k (19k extra words), 45 chapters and even more tangled, complicated relationships than the last draft.

what comes next?

i've been having a writing break, not only to replenish my writing juices but also because i gave myself slight carpal tunnel in the mad final two days of drafting. when i'm replenished, i plan on:

writing some short stories to submit to student magazines at cambridge

editing my hotspur poem for a mini zine i'm making with a friend

picking a new long-form project to be my mainstay

and querying askoh!!

where can i read askoh?

as always, the very first draft is still available on wattpad, but i would caution against it. i won't be generally releasing this draft, but i will be looking for beta readers, so if you'd like a copy of the improvised ebook you can dm me on tumblr or discord (@/hotspurpercy)

EXCERPT —

“You can — bury me — in the east —“ she begins to sing. “You — can — bury me — in the — west —“ Safire sobs, a small and wretched sound. This time, when Jesse kneels beside her and puts an arm around her, she doesn’t push him away. It feels like Jonathan’s heart is being squeezed; he knows the hymn, can all but hear his father singing it. “But I’ll hear that trumpet sound in the morning.” He joins in, coming as close as he dares. “In — the morning — my Lord — how — I long to — go —“ Annabel wheezes; blood bubbles over her lips where words fail. “For to hear that trumpet sound in the morning,” Jonathan finishes. Her breathing doesn’t stop immediately. It’ll be imperceptible for a while, but just as Jonathan is about to take Annabel’s pulse again, she’ll gasp in handful of hurried, squelching breaths. Nor do her eyes close; they’re glazed over like the beads of a bracelet, firelight dancing on their filmy non-comprehension as she gazes upwards. After fifteen minutes, there are no more hurried gasps. Jonathan rings his fingers around Annabel’s wrist; nothing. “Time of death, twenty minutes past two, December Sixth,” he pronounces.

the end of askoh: 15/08

words written so far: 3,313 current word count: 80,772

just like i did two years ago, i've given myself a stupidly tight time frame to finish ASKOH in. that time frame? today. i've already surpassed the last draft's word count, but two years ago i only had 10,000 words to write. this year i'll have to write 12,000 words to finish at my target word count today!

my game plan: write for two hours, then change location to keep myself focused. i've already finished two chapters, so now i'm going to have a shower, then maybe go to a coffee shop to write for another two hours.

time for my first journal entry of this week of trying to finish askoh!

today i finished (somewhat) sorting out my room after flatpacking my new bed, chest of drawers and desk over the weekend. i haven't had furniture in my room for over six months so it feels so good to finally be sleeping somewhere that isn't a mattress on the floor, and it's definitely made me more productive.

i also went on a run today! i know i haven't been the greatest at moving my body basically all this year, so i impulsively signed up to do a 10k in five weeks (!!!) and have been shitting myself about it ever since. it being manchester, it was raining torrentially, but i had a surprisingly good time.

in terms of writing, my biggest worry lately has been going over word count, especially as it seems to make sense if i add another chapter before the darkest hour. however, i think i can probably keep it at least under 100k! i definitely want to hit 90k, so somewhere in the 90-100k region is my end goal for word count. part of the problem may be that i'm having too much fun with the latest chapters; the end was my favourite part of the last draft, and it still has all those juicy scenes that appealed to me then. however, it's also a lot messier/more nonsensical than i remember! the characters and their relationships have also changed subtly, so bits have to be rewritten to accommodate that.

i'm hoping to mostly finish at least two chapters today, three if i can! and who knows, it would be nice to get four or five finished...
